not insulting your intelligence...but just wondering. does this happen everytime? steering wheel locked?

from the sounds of it, seems like its possibly time for a new ignition switch....

No insult taken. It started out as a sporadic thing and has progresses to a constant issue. I was thinking switch also but, and I forgot to mention this before, wiggling the automatic shift lever seems to help. That could be coincidence.

well on automatics there is a safety switch so that you can't take the key out unless its in park correct? i have 5spd so i don't know much about maxima autos.

are you a member on maxima.org? there are many knowledgable people on there. i will search that forum for related issues and see if we can't figure something out. i'm still thinking the switch but its possible that one of the other linkages could be worn out...

ok one more thing. do you jiggle the AT shifter every time to get it to work? i did some searching and some have talked about a bushing on the shifter linkage that goes bad. this would cause the shifter to not fully go into park. so instead of juggling the AT shifter just push it forward next time and see if it starts. if it does then its most likely a bad bushing. let us know!
