Rough Idle Questions

My daughter has an 01 Maxima with about 80,000 miles. The check engine light is on, it idles poorly and stumbles at low speed. She stopped at Auto Zone and it threw the following codes.

P0420 Ignition, cat, misfire
P1230 Ignition
P0302 Misfire, plug 2, might need plugs, wires and coil.

Any thoughts?

One more question...Does this car need the timing belt replaced...if so is it a non-interference engine?

Knowledgebase - 2001 Maxima - Nissanhelp.com hit that link up and download the engine control section and u should find all the info on your codes. most lickly cause of the misfire is either sparks, coils or stuck injector. cheapest route would be to try the sparks first then the coils and its recommended by nissan that they all be switched out and all of them replaced at the same time(coils and plugs ). if that dont work then u would need to check the injectors out. but keep us posted

IIRC it does have a belt, not sure on time interval for changing, but I think it's 105K.

If the belt breaks, your valves are trash.

First of all you car doesn't have belt it has timing chains. If you kept up on your oil changes regularly chains and tensioners don't need to be serviced until well over 100k. The only way you'll know is ticking sound or growling.

As to the your codes P1230 refers to ign coil has an internal open on the primary side of coil. The good thing is the P0302 code tells you that #2 coils is the bad one. Maximas are known for coil issues. Usually you have to replace all as a set but you should be able to get away with just #2.

Also the P0420 code is common on maximas as well hopefully after you fix you coil monitor to see this code doesn't come back because you will have to replace the front exhaust pipe to get rid of the P0420 code
