30,000 mile maintenance…to do or not to do? That is the question

Well I’m about to roll up on 30K miles and I’m really at a crossroads as to whether or not I should do it? I’ve SEARCHED & talked to lots of people and I basically get a 50/50 response; some say it’s worth it and others say absolutely not. This is the problem…my dealer wants $500(!) to do the following:
  • Replace engine oil, oil filter, and drain plug gasket
    Rotate tires
    Install MOC Engine Oil Supplement
    Lubricate chassis if applicable
    Clean battery terminals
    Install MOC Battery Terminal Protectors
    Replace air filter
    Add MOC Fuel System Treatment
Lubricate door hinges, hood, and trunk latches
    Adjust parking brake if needed
    Replace spark plugs (Platinum add)
    Replace fuel filter
Drain coolant; Replace with new coolant
Drain transmission fluid; Replace with new transmission fluid

    INSPECT the following…
all fluid levels and top-off as needed
    undercarriage and exhaust system
operation of interior and exterior lights
    for fluid leaks
    steering system
    battery
    front/rear brakes
    horn operation
visually inspect and adjust drive belts if needed
    operation of windshields wipers
    ignition timing
    cooling system
    clutch operation
    idle speed
    distributor rotor and cap

Notice the long list of things they simply “inspect” for For all you knowledgeable experts out there, what things should/need to be done at 30K? Obviously, I can do an oil change, tire rotation, etc on my own. I just need to know the pertinent things that should be done.

I put in red the things I would logically think should be done. Is that right? Then on top of all this, they have a separate list of “Additional Recommended Services” which of course, cost more $$$$. It has things like Fuel Injection Service, Throttle Body Service, Cooling System Power Flush, Brake Fluid Flush, Power Steering Flush, etc. Any of that need to be done too?

The only thing I would recommend would be the coolant but I've left coolant in cars for 60k and had it checked and it was perfect, usually the easiest way to replace coolant is go out buy a gallon, mix it half and half for the strongest protection, it use to be 60/40 but they changed it on some brands, then just take the drain bolt off the radiator, drain and then refill in radiator, start up and check level add if needed, now correct me if Im wrong but your manual trans is like changing the oil, pull drain plug and add what you removed, Im unsure but you may or may not have a trans dip stick so then it might become more of a challenge to fill it but you can get little pumps for 5-10 bucks.

The oil and tires is easy thats covered, now

Install MOC Engine Oil Supplement: your running M1 so the engine can't get any cleaner, no need for MOC

Lubricate chassis if applicable: with the car on the lift they hit some of the rubber bushing with white litium grease, seems pointless but guess it makes the techs look busy, it's pointless

Clean battery terminals: if you have anything building up on the terminals, get yourself some baking soda and water

Install MOC Battery Terminal Protectors: battery was fne for the 1st 30k so the MOC is another pointless item

Air Filter: you can do that right, it's a snap actually 4 snaps

Add MOC Fuel System Treatment: nothin but high priced fuel cleaner that they sell in the AutoZone, pick up some fuel injector cleaner and pour a bottle in every oil change, if you monitor your mileage long as it says about the same your good

Lubricate door hinges, hood, and trunk latches: white lithium grease on all the rubber hinges, stops etc..

E-Brake: put brake on put into drive and then reverse, if it don't move the brake is fine, you can even stop on a hill and check it.

Now the additional services
Fuel Injection Service,
Throttle Body Service,
Cooling System Power Flush,
Brake Fluid Flush,
Power Steering Flush,

In the owners manual it never really says to replace those just inspect but if they say 30k you can double them to 60k no problem, anything they say you can double, I might be wrong but make sure the Brakes and PS fluid don't share the same components, I've seen cars with PS fluid that needed Dot 3

Generally a 30k service is a rip off. Mostly they perform all recommended fluid changes and check for other problems. If those problems need to be fixed, they charge extra. Just get all the fluids changed thru a regular shop and save the $$$ for mods

chp4life 500 dollars is way to much for that stuff. Someone is getting the bedst of you at that price. Mine cost 320 with mobil 1 for the oil change. Granted most of it is checks and balances but I am not a trained eye so I would have someone else do this.

I have 28k on my altima and I recently got a letter from Nissan saying that I should take it to get the 30K schedule maintenance because the maintenance of my vehicle is their number one priority ( yea right )
They list all they will do which is almost the same as CHP4LiFe listed for $374 Now I was thinking about this too but I think that it's just a rip off because they actually do what they say.. they " Inspect " they don't change it or anything in other words they just look at it so I would rather save my money and do all of it myself

I'm about due for my 15,000 mile tune-up and I usually get the premium package when I've been in for oil changes and so on. Do you recommend me doing the same for the 15,000 mile checkup or are there certain things that are unnecessary. My dealer quoted me like $260 and I think that they are changing my air filter. But since I have a WAI he said he would discount the cost of the air filter and just clean my filter for me. Do you think this is a good deal or should I just do certain things and forget the whole premium maintainance package?

Welp , I guess I'm just going to do a coolant flush since I have a coupon for that. LoL Actually, I think I also have a coupon for a transmission flush too. I'll just do those for my 30K service. When 60K rolls around, I'll most likely do a lot more.

You're on the right path! Definitely service the tranny. All else is normal maintenance.
