I've been experiencing the low grinding noise at low speeds and the vibration issue at highway speeds on my '03 3.5 SE after I install aftermarket wheels. I went to the dealership and no help what so ever because automatically they blame the aftermarket wheels. I had my wheels rebalanced, rotors turned, new brake pads (I needed them anyways), alignment checked and that didn't help at all. So I finally installed oem steel wheels and the vibration gone away completely but the low grinding noise still exist but barely noticeable. I had Nissan test drive and of course they don't hear what I hear so I'm at a lost on what to do about this. However I did purchase hub centric rings and install them on my aftermarket wheels and that definitely cured the vibration problem. So I guess I will live with the low grinding noise for now until it gets worse.

if i am trying to stir the pot i am cuz of a reason. i did the above and it didnt work. so why should i pretend everything is fine? there is confusion cuz it aint working. not cuz other people that question it. if 2 plus 2 is four there is no confusion. if 2 plus 2 is sometime 4 and sometimes zero then i gotta stir the pot till i get a good answer as to why.
Seriously is name calling necessary. Here’s why I said it seemed like you weren’t doing anything but stirring the pot. The first post you made in reference to the problem was an argumentative one about a piece of plastic bending and swaying, and you talked about how it was there to protect the undercarriage. From that point on you then made nothing but counter arguments to everyone that tried to explain what appears to be a working solution from everyone that has posted about trying it. If it didn’t work for you then that information would help us understand more why you are so argumentative about it, but you didn’t state that you tried it until you turned the flamethrower on me. In fact you only previously said that you bolted it down and there was still a vibration caused by other factors. So my question to you is did you actually cut the air dam off to see if it fixed the problem (which you never even described yours specifically), or even try driving around with the splash guard removed? Or were you just saying that you tried it to rationalize why you got so mad at me? It appears to me that it’s only ok to criticize someone's argument that something works, but when someone tries to criticize your argument that it shouldn’t’ work then they are an .
However, all that being said I would like to throw up the white flag and put this petty argument to rest and ask some serious questions in the interest of actually finding the right solution for everyone.

my brothers ’02 has this also...
were you talking about the air dam or splash guard or both?

Does anyone out there with an ’02-’04 have or not have the air dam?

Has anyone else driven around with the splash guard removed and noticed a change in the vibration?

Has anyone else tried cutting off the air dam as a remedy and it not work?

how much were the rings? they come in standard sizes? the grinding noise might actuallly be the tire thread sticking if you got good rubber. toyo ts1 were noisy as hell but stuck to ground like glue, even over bumps.

net.altima you are the only one against this fix. So if you don't like it get out of this tread. I know for a fact that this works.

I purchased the rings from www.prestigewheel.com at $7.50 ea. As for as I know they're standard sizes but it also depends on your aftermarket wheel center bore size. As for my tires they're Yokohama AVS ES100. Thanks

To all those cutting the air dam and curing your problems...

what about us SE-R owners?! :-( We have no air dam!!!

I'll try and bring it up to the dealers next time, to consider air flow like that.

To the original question in the beginning of the post, I have:
'03 3.5 auto
vibrations started at second or third tire rotation at ~20k miles
happens at all speeds from 1 to 80 mph

The offending rotation was done at Sears. When returned they said the tire had a flat spot. Funny, my wife or I never locked up the brakes ever, and the problem was immediate on pickup. New tires were recommended, but not done. I will check my tire serial numbers and harrass the dealer/Sears. It really feels like a tire has a broken cord or some other lump-not a flat spot. It has not gone away after two more rotations, and can casue the steering wheel to move on it's own at 5 mph.

I do have the airdam on my car- I will look into that too, but at 1 mph??
My understanding of the airdam is to not let air under the car (reduce lift), and this redirects air through the radiator (practical use of waste I say). oval, and SCCA racers have known about this for years. Very easy as the dam CAN be flexible like this rubber. I won't knock this fix until I've tried it wholeheartedly.

Justin

Interstingly, I bolted the front plastic under fairing to the bumper instead of the useless plastic clips. Vibration problem is gone, has yet to come back. I'm wondering if somehow the bolts keep the fairing from moving and keep the vibrations from happening. Chris
