Type of / Suggestions for engine oil for Nissan Altima 2.5 S

I am new to the whole car world. My first car was the car I just bought last month, a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 S.

After a close encounter with an engine lockup (due to my ignorance to the health of the engine, by not looking at oil levels and such), I decided I need to learn all I can about my car and cars in general.

Please excuse me if this is very "newbie" like questions in regards to cars. What sort of oil does a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 S need? What is the best choice for the best performance and care for the engine?

Damn, lockup? You have the service record of the car before buying it? Hrmm...A lot of issues with the 02 2.5L. For starters, change oil every 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. I'd use Mobil 1 oil, but its your car.

Oh yeah, welcome to the forums. Be sure to read the other Forums such as , "FAQ" and "Common problems..." You'll find a lot of imformation there.

10W-30 is standard. 5W-30 for premium performance. Click here for Mobil's suggestion page. Good Luck.

Thanks for that website...very helpful!

I am debating which to use. Now I believe I have 10W-30 in there right now, next time I change the oil, or even when I do it, after I drain it can I put in 5W-30?

I was just wondering what is the best for me.
I am using 10W-30 now, and I might change over to 5 (as it was suggested for better performance).

I am just looking for more input.

O'k I need to stick my opinion in here for a reality check. In my opinion if you change your oil regularly (every 5,000 miles is just fine for normal driving conditions) you do not need to use synthetic oil it's just a waste of money unless you plan on keeping the car for 500,000 miles. Use any brand you like just change it regularly with the filter. (No Fram filters, they are crap, I use purolator). No where in my manual does it say that 10w-30 should be used it my car. It says 5w-30 for all driving conditions. I don't understand why anyone would want to use anything different. It's not like 5w-30 costs more than 10w30 so why not use 5w-30. 5W-30 non-synthetic oil (any brand), new filter every 5,000 miles and you won't have an oil related engine failure in 200,000 miles.
