Question Shift Lock Release

I have an 02 3.5 SE and 2 days ago my battery went dead out of no where. I was stuck in a Sears parking lot and the car wouldn't even turn over at all. Luckliy Sears Auto was right there. I was going to push my car over to Sears Auto (I had my g/f with me at the time), but of course the car would not shift into neutral b/c of the shift lock. I had a screw driver luckily and did exactly what the manual stated, which was to press down on the shift lock to release it. Well, it was not as simple as it was stated in the manual. I tried every thing to get the shift lock to release. Just pressing down on it was not enough to allow me to shift into neutral. I tried everything and still no luck with releasing the shift lock. Luckily my brother-in-law came by and was able to jump my car for me. $70 later, I have a new battery, but still could not figure out the shift lock. For those of you that have released the shift lock, was it as easy as pressing down on the shift lock and moving the gear selector to neutral? Thank you.

Shift Lock

The shift lock prevents you from moving the gear selector without the brake being pressed when the car is on. If the car is off, the gear selector will remain in Park, unless the shift locked is released........

Yeah, its that round thingy on the top, I think for auto's only? But I heard you just pop that thing off and push down or something.. I never had to do it. Maybe the plastic cap comes off before you push down?

shift lock

It's actually pretty easy.

1) pop off that cover (the stupid little thing looks like a button)

2) Use a long slender object to press inside the hole. You will feel it when it releases.

3) When it releases continue pressing the button and shift.

The owners manual is less than informative and fairly vague. I had to call the dealership to find out how to release the shift lock.
