Shouldn't have done anything to the ECU. Are you sure the terminals are on tight?

If the car cranks and there's power, I don't think it's the battery, though.

you didnt ground them out accidentally against each other did you?
check simple shit - underhood fuses and connections.
i cant see the ecu being damaged before a fuse blows though.

hhm thanks for the replies... got it towed to Nissan already... guy said the chips in the keys could have been disprogrammed and car doesnt recognize the keys.
Tried starting with eather (the Quick start spray), started for a second and died.. i think it might be fuel pump, although it would be a coinsidence of timing...
checked all fuses under hood and in car..... right now i just think its a matter of coinsidence that something else failed while i was doing this maintenance....
thanks for all the replies....

As Cvl stated..I bet you need to take a look at the terminals.....If this just started after you discon the battery........I bet you got a bad connection...and it just needs tightened up a bit. You would be suprised how often this happens......You must have a strong, tight connection

If it were the chips in the keys it would never have fired at all.

I agree its something loose.

did you happen to turn the car on then shut it real quick anytime before cleaning the terminals. If you did you flooded it.. if you just kept on trying to start it by turning it over without giving more gas pedal it would of started. But if you kept pressing the gas and then tried starter fluid you just flooded it more. thats my guess

I doubt its a loose terminal if it turns over like normal as you say.. it just wont fire.. it have to be fuel or ignition. That would be a coincidence though for something like that to happen, but not impossible.

you guys need to remember that the fuel injection doesnt listen to tb input until AFTER the engine starts. ecu pulses all injectors until startup regardless of pedal position EXCEPT for WOT. wot changes the loop condition of the ecu. i cant remember though if it goes to open or closed....

thats the problem its not firing, but its turning over. So if its turning over then the pistons are pulling air in so air is moving through the intake and fuel has got to be injecting or how else would it fire. Now if he getting fuel and its not firing then he's not getting spark.

You need to read the manual that came with your car. The Altima has a cold weather and flood start program in the ecu that required throttle input. The electronic throttle is active when the motor is running and while cranking the starter...its sort of like a hybrid between an old carbeurated car and a conventional fuel injected car in that you can apply throttle to assist starting while cranking, but pumping the gas with the car off won't flood it.

This is a relatively comon problem with 2.5's...not sure if the 3.5 is subject to the same flooding issues.
