I bought a blank key, and I went to a locksmith to cut it already. Doors open but don't turn on the car. Do I need the orignal key to program the spare?
I think that you need to have it registered. That's the big problem, it costs 70 dollars to have it programed at the nissan dealer. With all of these new cars, you can't just Dupe the keys they must be registered within the car. It will cost an arm and a leg too!
.......
(so many people buy their cars without really knowing features....)
You can't just copy it from some locksmith...
There's an encryption code recorded on a key, and the car detects that code to see if it's the correct key or not. If the code doesn't match, the car won't start.
As Supermariokart said, you need to visit your local Nissan dealer and have them program the key.

when i got my alti the dealer only had one of the keys, so i bought myself another one at the local dealer about 3 weeks later... for around $100... then i was back at the first dealer to see about having some paint work done that they owed me, and he pulls out a second key to my car. i was pissed, tried to talk them into giving me $100, but I settled for a tank of gas... which actually this day in age runs about $60, so i wasn't too mad in the end

My altima only came with one key im pissed :X Im considering going there and getting another, then just buying a little FOB online on ebay for 20 bucks or something like that.
I went back twice with my term of sale quote to get a key fob they owed me, and the service girl is a bitch and didn't get it in her thick head that they owed me and tried to charge me for it, so I went to the salesman and 2 min later had a new key and a remote ready to go. I love my dealer just the service reps are
BTW if you are buying a used car and it only has one key, you can be sure that if you tell the dealer that you want an extra key they will make it happen since it wont cost them retail.

wish i knew that. i only received 1 key and fob. brought another blank key and fob off ebay. took it to a locksmith to get cut. then took the key to the dealer to get programmed for 40 bucks ( i think - wasnt more than that.)
The problem with the Altima's transponder keys is that they can only be programmed using the Nissan Consult computer at a dealer (or whoever else happens to have one of those computers on hand )
My mother's Chevy Venture has transponder keys as well, but those you can program into the computer yourself by following a simple sequence of actions that are clearly explained in the owner's manual (of course, you need at least one other original key to do so for security purposes - two in Canada). The dealer can also do it for you using the GM computer.
I guess Nissan just wants more $$$$$$ from us
