P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
I had my buddy run a diagnostic test and it spit back code P0442, which is "P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)" Any idea how much this will cost me to fix, where do I get the part?
Tighten your gas cap and drive the car for a week. Your cap may not have been put on tight enough the last time you got gas. That'll do it every time. And it's free.

I do make sure the gas cap is tight, I make sure it clicks when closing it tightly. The engine light has been on for a months.
You have to find where the leak is coming from first. The fuel filler neck, gas tank, charcoal canister and lines in between all the way back up to the purge volume control valve are part of the system. When the ECM sees a small leak in the system from the evap pressure sensor it turns the light on. You need a Consult with mighty vac or a fog machine to find the leak. I would recommend taking to dealer.

Have your buddy clear the code from the computer and see how long it takes to come back, if it comes back at all that is. I've had this code show up, cleared it and it never came back. Cheapest fix I've ever had!

Check the area of the filler neck where the gas cap gasket meets it. Mine is all rusted to hell and couldn't hold a seal no matter how tight the cap is. I've had to clean mine with a wire brush many times after getting the 0442 code. I finally cleaned it real good and used some gas tank liner gel which is used to line the gas tanks of older motorcycles and I haven't had a problem since.
