?'s Answered on DTE, Fuel Light, MPG

This past month I did a little test to see how far I could go, what DTE actually was, How much gas I had when Light came on etc..I filled car about a month ago....I had 3 extra cans I filled at the same time totalling an extra 15 gallons in which I put in the car as it needed it. I reset the trip ODO and went on my way. Most of my driving is in the city, with a good 8 cold starts per day and short 1-2 mile trips. Here are my results..

My gas light came on at 17,998 miles and my DTE read 26
When I got to the gas station I had 17,999 miles and DTE read 28

The car took 15.51 Gallons to full meaning that the car has about a 4.5 Gallon reserve.

So if my DTE said 28 that is way, way off because over 638.9 miles I averaged 20.94 mpg.

So actually, if I averaged the 20.94 mpg that I had been getting I could have theoretically gone 113.07 miles before running out of gas. Much further if it were all highway.

I hope this helps to answer some of your questions about our cars that get asked all of the time.

BILL

Well the problem I'm seeing is mine is showing MPG 26.5... I reset it all the time and drive about 15 miles on a 4 lane highway to school, then back home, and through town to go to work. I will reset it and a week later come back and it will be on 26.5 again. My Car seems to love showing that and I don't know why? Any ideas on that one? and btw I've calculated the MPG myself and i'm truly getting about 22-23... Anyone think it could be involving the "tire size throwing off mpg and speedo" feud that a lot of owners have been tore up about?

i pretty sure the DTE when flashing and reading a number is how many miles you have left till your on the reserve of 5 gallons. So you "should" have about 100 miles till your bone dry.

For our beloved Altima:

DTE = Wrong
Odometer = Wrong
MPG = Wrong
Speedo = Probably off (if you have different wheels)

Fuel lights comes on = 4-5 gallons in tank

Any questions?
