How to add refrigerant

Hi Guys,

Have any one have added a refrigerant to the air conditioner unit? Mine is blowing warm air now and thinking about adding a refrigerant to it but never done it before. Any written up procedure or pictures are appreciated.

I dont know if you can even buy that and add it yourself!

I know it used to be, but they stopped allowing people to do that on their own years ago, enviromental reasons and all.

Theres an ac tube on the left, upper side of the engine bay. Ive never done it myself, but I did see my buddy do it on his max. Its like adding air to a tire almost...Around here, you can find the refill cans @ almost every parts store.

You should probably make a trip to the local AutoZone. I'm sure they will be more than happy to point you in the right direction on which kind to buy and where to put it. I didn't know they actually come outside for reasons other than windshield wipers and new battery installations but last time I went the employee was installing a whole K&N WAI into a mustang. I'm sure they wouldn't mind a tip.

Mine was blowing kinda warm last year. I just went to Wal-Mart and and got a recharge kit. It was like 20 bucks and it even came with a tube that hooks to the AC and guage to let you know when the system was full. It's blowing colder than ever.

I tried this today and thought I was going to die. The top of the can blasted off and gas started spraying out of the can. I threw it so that if it blew up I wouldn't end up in the hospital, and the second it hit the ground, it basically burst and sent shrapnel flying in all directions. I took it back to AutoZone (in aluminum pieces) and they gave me a refund. THEN, stupid me, I bought another bottle and tried it again. Neon green liquid started to come out of the piping before I realized that it was coming OUT of my car. I'm scared to death of doing this and might take it to my local mechanic and get HIM to do it for me

There is a product called red tech you could charge your ac system with but I recommend taking it to a refrigeration tech.

If your system is low then you probably have a small leak that can be detected by removing the remaining refrigerant and charging the system with nitrogen. This allows the system to pressurize to operating pressures and soapy water can then be used to detect leaks in the system.

I was able to check my pressure today and it showed that it was in the "normal" range (had mechanic do this, I'm no longer touching anything having to do with pressurized cylinders). However, my A/C isn't as cold as I'd like it to be. BTW, don't get the liquid Freon gas on your hands. You'll know it isn't good to touch because it's a nasty neon green.
