Disappointing Dealer Service Experience

Today I went to get an oil change at my usual Nissan dealership.

After the oil change they told me that the radiator hose was leaking and should be replaced. I was quoted the cost for parts was $18.63 each + $207.88 for labor.

I thought this was excessive and went to an independent auto repair shop where they told me the radiator hoses didn't need to be replaced, but instead needed to just have the ends cleaned and re-tightened the hose connection. Not sure if I explained the technical aspect correctly, but the mechanic assured me the hoses didn't need to be replaced.

The mechanic also said that radiator hoses on most Japanese vehicles last for around 100k miles.

Quick questions:
1. Anyone else avoid going to dealerships for the major service intervals at 30/60/90?
2. If yes, how come? Cost?
3. How long do radiator hoses last in general?

Top radiator hose blew up at just under 75K! Dealer exclusive parts and the top one was in stock. To be on the safe side I also ordered and replaced the lower hose. Maintenace on coolant is change once a year antifreeze/distilled water 50/50 mix. Dealership only saw my Alti once for a front wheel bearing R & R, tranny flush, and Consult II adjust. I prefer to DIM when it is all possible as to other work on my car. Dealer hourly labor is over $100 + just under $20 for writing up the workorder.

I had the radiator hose replaced last summer and it was leaking all over the place, and the car had over 85K miles on it and the dealer taxed my ass on that job.

Thats the same dealer that i bought my car from, but they changed owners about 2 and half years ago and everything went down hill after that, especially since they didn't honor the coupon book that the original dealer sent me shortly after i bought the car.

^ That sux! The only time I darken the door of the dealer is for warranty, or recall work. I'm definitley DIY and keep accurate records.

I try to avoid the dealer at all costs, I've even hesitant to go into the dealer for recalls... Definitely cost, and them trying to make everything sound so "must do" and like you don't know how complicated any car work is. Just don't want to deal with them hassling me telling me how it costs $500 to rotate tires or something silly of that nature.

I had some leaking out of the radiator hose not too long ago, probably happened when I attempted to install my motor mount inserts as I could have accidentally pulled on the hose... I just loosened the coupler, moved the hose back up, tightened it back up and its been fine since.
