this is kinda weird but i changed the oil on my friends 2005 3.5 se-r and he had the old oil in their for a long time i mean over the standard 3k he had it in for 5k on conventional oil the oil was bad. well i changed it with mobile 1 high performance and a mobile 1 filter and then after we took it for a drive and it sounded raspy like as if somethings wrong. now i thought maybe i did something wrong so i took it to a mechanic and he said everything was fine but just incase we had change the oil and he said the tire rack was loose so he tightened that up but it still makes a raspy noise when you accelerate. anyone know what the problem is? its been like this for 2 months
Did he change only cat back, or everything? On my 02 3.5, i had a metal rattle during acceleration for a few months, and i eventually found out that it was a heatshield became loose due to rust on the Y pipe. I would take a look under there, to see if its anything obvious like mine was.

he changed it just from the catalyst back he had to change his flexpipes because he busted one of his cat converters on a pothole but it mite be the heatshield how would i check that like where is located exactly because it could sound like something stuck in the heat shield since its only weird when he drives
The 3.5's have problems with the exhaust gussets breaking. Look under and you should see one on the bank 1 primary catalyst, connecting from the aluminum oil pan to the B1 primary catalyst. The second one is on the bank 2 catalyst (towards the front of the car) and bolts to the aluminum oil pan, it is curved, the other is relatively straigt. If you see a brown rust crack alltheway through. That may be your problem. Also the 3.5's have a problem with the B1 (firewall) primary catalyst heat shield breaking loose at the spot weld. You can try and have that one repaired but we replace the cat. If it's the gussets, there is a TSB (not recall, it tells us how to fix it only) with fix parts. The gussets are not connected in any way to the y or flexpipe.
I have very light raspy noise under certain load around 1500-2000 rpm on drive only(2.5S). No noise on park/reverse gear. The flex pipe is still good and all bolts are tight. The noise is getting worse after the engine is warm but weaker during the rain (wet road).
Firmly tap on different parts of the exhaust with a rubber mallet to isolate rattles in heat shields, pipes, hangers, couplers, catalyst monoliths, resonators, mufflers, etc. It should be pretty easy to isolate that way.

I tapped all the heat shields and cannot find the source. the sound is like old hard drive in old computer. Only on drive and reverse with light load at arround 1500 rpm. More pronounced when engine is fully warmed up. Timing chain and tensioner are in good condition.
