2.5L Oil Capacity Question - 3 7/8qts?

I've got a 2002 2.5L and the manual says oil capacity w/filter change is 3 7/8 quarts. After my first oil change today it took 4.5 quarts to refill. I've run the engine, checked and rechecked and I'm still not guite to the max line but close. Anyone else experienced this? I hope my dipstick is correct otherwise I'm afraid I could be floating the valves.

Did you check the dipstick imediately after the engine was running??? The only way I can get an accurate reading is to let the engine sit for at least 30 minutes before I check the oil level.

where did you get 3 7/8 from?

from '02 svc manual

edit: actually the svc manual does say 3 3/4 qt for "Imp Measure". Imperial Measure?

strange. i don't feel like digging in the glove box and can't find the 02 online, but the 03 does show 3 7/8 for the VQ w/o filter change. does your show same amount for both engines and with and without filter change?

i know when i am lower in oil capacity, cuz my valves will tick. my car has always had the tick, but when i perform an oil change with 4.5qts of oil the tick becomes barely noticeable. i need to take care of that tick though dammit...

Thanks phreekee25. Like Dloudy my owners manual says 3 7/8qts (US measure) but I'm more likely to trust the service manual. I'm very surprised it would be that different but I do feel better knowing the service manual says 4.5.

4.5 quarts is the correct amount but I put 5 quarts since she burns some oil. So, after 6000/6 months you still have enough oil.

Maybe the capacity is different for the 02-04 and the 05-06. I have 2005 2.5 & 3.5 and both say 4.5 US quarts.

mine is an '02 and the svc manual also says 4.5. i think they were saying that the owner's manual has different numbers than the service manual.

Ahh...Gotcha...Usually, I'm only half listening. Now I can add half-reading...

hi saltima02,what is the oil lever when you put 5 quarts? above max mark, or just at the max mark? I think it is overfill and not good for the engine.
