Hey guys,
I'v read up on some articles published by car review sites that you should shift into neutral at long red light signals and other places to take the wear off the torque converter. I've been in a habit of shifting into neutral (in automatic car) at stop signs and signals everywhere. Does this technique help at all or does it just cause further wear and tear on transmission and cause it to fail early?
I know this is obviously true on manual cars, but does it have an impact on automatics? Also hear you can get some better MPG's off of it too.
I'm pretty sure that our cars have an automatic fuel cutoff so that when you aren't on the accelerator you aren't using fuel (don't get how that exactly works cuz the car is still on.). Also when you shift into neutral, the cutoff doesn't kick in so you end up using more fuel. This is what I've learned from a fuel economy forum.

You should be fine at a stop light but just dont roll backwards or fowards and hit someone. just be REALLYYY careful that you dont hit the accelerator right before you slip it into drive, that's NOT good! your car's an auto and dropping into into neutral for us is not the same as a manual so i would stop..

Yea, ive been doing that a lot. I think I will stop doing this and just keep it in neutral. Can someone confirm Ankit's comment on fuel cutoff and its relevance in neutral.
i know my dad did this in our old car...and he doesnt do it in our altima now. it was like a habit kinda thing. Really i would only do that if its a super long light and i would pull up my handbrake just in case so if some one hits me i wont move much. but yea just dont gas right away...shift to D then wait a a few secs then gas

You need to understand how an automatic transmission works to find the answer to your question.
But all in all, while you may save a tiny amount of wear on your torque converter you will be causing even more wear on the bands and clutches in the transmission.

I do this all the time....If you drive a 2.5, you should know why....
If you're trying to save gas, shift into N and then turn the engine off at the long light....This I also do a lot. I only do it if it isnt hot out and when the light is longer then 2 mins.
I dont think that just shifting into N will save much gas, if any. As for the wear on the transmission, I don't think it will do much more harm then regular shifting does anyway. Just dont N drop it, like said above.

yah i think it's kinda weird you turn your engine off as well. lol. i shift into N at lights all the time mainly to stop the annoying vibration my car likes to do.
what light you at for more than 5 mins??? i know last night when i got out of my house i had to wait at my light for like 5-6 mins because a firetruck passed by and that made my light stay red..then when it was spouse to turn it still stayed red THEN another firetruck/ambulance came by and that just made my night....but i do hope where ever they was going they saved a life
you probably burn more gas starting the car back up than you would of just idling.. Plus the extra wear and tear on the starter, battery, and overall engine. Car is like a computer...its better to leave it running for long periods of time, rather than turning it on a and off a bunch of times.
And im willing to bet its against the law too, if you knowingly turn your car off and block the way of a emergency vehicle cause your car wont start back up....i can see it being a problem. Are you really that broke with gas prices at 1.85 you need to do this??? you need to stop it right away.
