What does a blown strut sound like?

When passenger side front wheel goes over a bump, there's a noticeable heavy rattle or clunking sound. It's a deep sound, and is not high pitch, and only occurs when there is suspension travel.

Does this sound like a bad strut? If so, does anyone have any recommendation on a cheap replacement? I will probably buy the parts and pay some guy off the street to do it

NISSAN DOESN'T BACK ITS PRODUCT> My 3.5 engine blew just under 5 years due to a loose throttle body screw. $3500 out of pocket. Oh, and now my transmission is slipping.

if it sounds(feels)like your tire is still bouncing after you hit the bump then yes. but it could be alot of things. from the top mount to the ball joint, tierod, control arm and bushings. if you change the one strut better do the other. hopes this helps. but then again some times i dont know shit

It actually doesnt make any noise. If its damaged you may see fluid coming out where the piston goes into the shaft body of the shock or you may not. The most noticeble symptom is the the car bouncing/diving in the direction of the blown shock.

Depends, some may make no noise. most ive seen when they are totally worn out or blown make a clunk clunk when you hit anykinda bump at speed.

like said above, its more about feel then sound.

the clunk does not come from the shock though. If you think of the mechanics of a shock absorber, even if its totally blown out and drops when you remove it, it will not make any noise (unless you here the internal fluid gurgle/hiss). The clunking and clicking etc... comes from other parts on the chassis stretching and moving to there limits when going over ruff pavement because the shock is no longer limiting your down or upward movement.

Just try and lean on the car at the place where you think the strut has gone bad and if the side goes down and than recovers and stops than strut is working if it goes up and down like a "ship in the water" than your strut is bad.

that may work for the rears but when my fronts crapped out,
doing that showed me nothing at all.

your more likely going to damage a fender panel trying to push the car up and down like that.

Hrm, I think it might sound like that. I had my oil changed and they thought it sounded like a wheel bearing, but I've never heard of a wheel bearing making a clunking sound.

OH, not sure if this is related, but my MPG has been greatly reduced lately. (like from 25 avg. to 21 avg.). It also pulls a lot to the right when I accelerate.
