Use what's listed in the owners manual. a lot of times they'll list a substitute, such as a Honda manual tranny lists Honda MTF or 10w-30 oil... but the additives and such between the MTF and oil are different and its best to use the other fluid as a temporary deal.
Now being that DEX III/Mercon is also an ATF, if the manual lists that as an option then you should be fine running either long term. As a side note, check the back of some synthetic ATFs (amsoil, castellated, Valvoline, etc) and they'll list what specs they cover... a lot do matic J off of the top of my head (what the xterras use though they were superceeded by S).
I'm not sure if D was superceeded by another Matic or if its still current
my trans is starting to act up..i think its a electronic issue...i use the castrol import dex3 fluid...always comes out clean no shavings
"I was going to join the spec ops division of the boy scout reserves today, but they said that my tangelo belt in tae-bo and advanced levels of yo-yo warfare training make me over qualified. I guess it's time to talk to some of the other branches and see if they can help me. I hear the fireside girls have a pretty tough unit that has a focus on search and rescue of small mamals."
