I recently attempted to replace timing chain and tensioners on a 2005 Altima 3.5.
After I installed everything I attempted to roll motor over by hand just to verify everything was ok before i put outer timing cover on but it hit a hard spot around 3/4 of a full revolution and seized.i could go back the other way stops at same spot . I ended up taking everything back off along with removing cams and plugs . It is still locking up. It was running fine before I tore it down just noisy from wore out secondary's.
Any idea what could of happened? Is there any bolts in the timing cover that maybe could prevent engine from spinning ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
I don't know what/how you went about doing the timing gear replacement, but bare with me as here is how it should be done.
Take off the upper intake, valve covers, and spark plugs if they are not already off. [Having all of the spark plugs out will make the engine easier to turn by hand].
Now have someone help you with this. Have them slowly turn the engine by hand with a ratchet/socket on the crank pulley/damper.
Take the palm of your hand, and hold it over the number one plug hole tube , located on the cylinder head that is on the firewall side of the engine, and nearest to the passenger side fender. [If your still unsure of what number one piston is, find a chart on the net.]
When number one piston is on compression stroke you should feel air pressure trying to push your palm off the spark plug tube.
Now check the crankshaft gear as the timing mark on the gear should be getting close to the timing mark on the block.
After that just align everything as you did before.
I finally got it figured out today . First I checked each cylinder to make sure no valves were stuck/bent using compressed air. No leaks....
Second I removed oil filter and cut it open to check for any metal shavings thinking the noise it started making may have been more than the worn secondarys
NO shavings...
Third i ended up pulling heads thinking something may have fell in the cylinder even though I plugged intake with rags when removed . when I removed the rear head it freed up . I'm thinking something either may have got in the cylinder and fell out when I removed the head or the excessive carbon build up may have caused it . I cleaned the carbon off the head and pistons then reinstalled the head Tightened a few bolts and Still spins Freely . I'm gonna start going back together with it tomorrow
I appreciate your response . I'm a diesel mech by trade but this thing had me puzzled for a minute.
Thanks again
