06 Maxima SE Gas tank capacity

I just got a 2006 Maxima SE (6 speed - love it!), replacing my 2000 Maixma 5 speed. The manual says the gas tank capacity is 20 gallons US. Most times I refill when the fuel low light has come on, and the MTE display is less than 35. Yet I never get more than 16 gallons into the tank on a fill-up.

Is this typical?

I mentioned this to the service crew at the dealer and they confirmed the spec of 20 gallans but they had no answer.

The 3rd gen+ Altimas also have a 20gal tank and when the light comes on takes about 16gal to fill. If you search, you will find several threads about it. I think Nissan just gives us lots of reserve.

My Altima also had a 20 gallon. The warning usually came on with about 3.5 gallons left (DTE around 50 or so).
