Ceiling Rattle, Sounds like dome light - fix?

Hi everyone,

Lately my ceiling has been rattling and it's bugging the pi$$ out of me. It sounds like it's coming from the dome light, but I'm not sure how to address it. I was thinking it might be coming from the sunroof slider as well.

I read somewhere that older Altimas had a TSB issued regarding this problem and the fix was to put some foam inside of the dome light to stop the rattle. Should I attempt this for the SE-R? Anyone else have this issue?

Its the rubber trim around the sunroof. What I did was pulled it down a little bit and shoved paper towels or something similar in there. Pack it tight...it wont stop it completely, but will significantly reduce it, by I'd say at least 95%. Youll hear a tick maybe here and there over the largest of bumps but thats it.

Ahhh, I know exactly the rubber you're talking about. I wonder if there's a more "professional" approach, but I'll start with the basics I guess.

Is it even worth mentioning to the stealership? Maybe during my next oil change I'll yell at them to fix it.

Rattles!!!!!!

Yes I had the same ratlle. I took the dome light apart and put foam on all contacting surfaces that could rattle. That rattle is gone 100% but there are others.. The sunglasses holder and something in the sunroof over the pasenger side rattles when you hit bumps. Haven't had time to look for those "suckers"... Thanks '06 SE-R

Thats nissan for you, build quality on interiors suck and will rattle. Maxima rattles, altima rattles, 350Z rattles. Just go to any forum and theyre all bitching about their rattles. It is very annoying....

Just wait till you get one in your dash and you have to figure out a way to take it apart, then figure out where the hell its coming from, then figure out a way to make it stop.

Dealerships wont even test drive the car and say they couldnt hear anything, they dont give a shit about those types of things.

Yea rattles are just downright annoying. I haven't had too many issues with my car yet... build quality isn't horrible, but its not a Lexus either.

Rattles suck, but it's the only complaint I have about this car. I love every aspect of this thing! I'll stuff some foam in there and hopefully that'll fix it. Where do I buy foam?!?!?

Thumbs up

You don't have to buy foam.. I had the same issue and i used some from a stereo packaging or any styrofoam package you have..all you need are about 3 or 4 small pieces ...I just put them all around the dome light between the roof and the headliner..of course after this you'll need to apply a little bit of pressure to get the screws back in and it worked 100% for me.

Great thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try soon and let you know how it works!

They should just make the interior of the SE-R out of foam to begin with, haha.

I have a '05 3.5SE with sunroof, how do I gain access to that area to put the foam?

[quote=Smoke3.5SE]Thats nissan for you, build quality on interiors suck and will rattle. QUOTE]

I used to be an absolute freak about rattles... in my 02 I actually took out all the seats and carpet, and put foam down on the whole floor area, under a lot of the plastic trim, under the pillars, ceiling above the dome light, etc. etc.

I've realized, it was not helped at all by the hard tires & suspension. When I put my winters on, everything gets quiet.

My first 05, I didn't tear apart. Around that time, having spent significant time in a nice 330 and another friend's mercedes SUV, my rattle issues were minor.

In those, everything rattled. In mine, it was those 1 or 2 things. Sometimes 2 rattles is a worse situation than 20. When everything rattles, you kind of don't notice one over the others.....

I'm a MAJOR voter for the no rattle, but after being in some other new (less than 3 yrs old) vehicles, I'm not as bad off as I thought...

I know dodge is big no quiet environment now, they claim the new grand cherokee is quieter than an S type, or some marketing hype. I'd like to see what other cars sound like with the hard tires and harder suspension. Has anyone had good quiet experiences on other vehicles?

Is there a major difference in the infinitis?

Ya this is my third third gen, and I've loved them all a little more.... I'm a hell of an negotiator (and I'm nice about it) plus I got lucky a couple times. The first car was an 02 I bought in November 2002-- they wanted to get it off the lot. I drove 3 hours for the car-- negotiated the price online and they told me what they'd give me for my trade without even seeing it.

The first 05 I bought on a weekend that a dealership had "relaunched" after being refurbished/rebuilt, June 04 I bought an 05. So in a way I got ahead 3 model years in 18 months. [Luck]. The sales manager gave it to me way cheap. They wanted to sell a certain # of cars that weekend. 2 hours from home.

The SE-R is 05 and was bought in June or July 05. It wasn't a super deal, I think I got it for 26 something, it had XM built in and a few other additional costs, plus they went to Silver Springs Maryland to get it for me-- about 3-5 hours? Not sure. Dealer 1 hour from home. I demanded red inserts and they got me red inserts nearing the end of the 05 availability of SE-R's before 06's came out. I paid less than I could have for a red one, but I was ok with it. I wanted black or gray with red inserts.

I've had 5 year loans on each of them, and within 12 - 18 months, I've found a dealer that would give me more for it than I had left on the loan. In that case, I say, "Why not?" I had super low loan rates too, like 4.5, 4.84 and 4.08 so that helped out in getting more loan and less interest paid off.

When you don't "need" a new car it's a lot easier to deal. Hopefully I'll stick with this one a little longer. I've also realized if the dealer thinks you love Nissan and are an entheusiast, and tell them straight up if you have a great experience there you will tell everyone who is car shopping, they seem more willing to cut to the chase. I'm honest, I do tell people when I have a good buying experience.

I've also managed to assist in having a service manager swapped out due to my continual and unrelentless customer surveys. I'm all about service. Nissan's all about service, any dealer that isn't should be shut down. {end rant}

Back onto the rattles.....
I've noticed having three latest gen altimas, at least with the brick roads around here, things seem to get rattley around 10K and a little worse at 12K, and the most I've had on one was 27K but they didn't seem to get any worse after 12K.

Maybe nissan will have enough cash and time to spend on quieting down the interior. Things fit so tightly even a temperature change causes things. The left side of my rpm ring sqeaks like styrofoam pieces being rubbed together when its HOT. My sunroof rattles when its COLD. So far, my only solution has been to use the radio dial...

I had a lot of nit picky things on the 2002 that I needed fixed. I have a few on the first gen 05. I have had nearly no complaints at all about the SE-R, and likely would feel the same about any 05 "third gen second edition". My only complaint is the driver's door doesn't align right when I open it (closing is fine), it thuds up or down. But not all the time. Dealer adjusted once, its not constant so, I just live with it

3.5/4 years has definitely taught me to chill on the sqeak freak. If it happens on every one, I can accept the fact that it's normal, and at least some of the time, not feel OCD about stopping it, and just turn the radio up.

Not all the time.

UPDATE: I started a thread a few weeks back. My glove box area is rattling worse now...I mean its BAD. I guess I'm glad since it will be easy to point out. Don't write off the dealerships so fast....they are going on a test drive with me on the 15th. In the FSM there is a whole detailed section on rattles. Belive it or not....they are aware of negative feeling it creates about the cars.....guess thats why they have created a full section about it.

I wonder if Nissan's have always rattled and had poor interior quality? My 1998 Maxima SE was solid as a rock and I used to brag about how "tight" everything was. Now with my '05 SE-R I'm actually embarrassed to have a passenger hear my ceiling rattle when their POS Jetta sounds tight. I'm gonna take apart the dome light and hopefully fix things this weekend.

I agree with the previous post too, weather change brings rattle change. I have different sounds and problems when it's warm w/ summer tires than I do when it's cold w/ winter tires. The winter package is better as far as rattles go.
