Daytime running lights

Not sure if this applies only to Canadian drivers but I noticed mine are not working (even though it's 100% a Canadian car and it's the law to have them).

I've done no mods to any electrical or lights so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I didn't notice if they were working when I bought the car (used) over 2 years ago or if they stopped working somewhere along the way. I would imagine that if it's a blown fuse, more that just my daytime running lights would be affected.

Any ideas?

EDIT: everything (including lights), is working fine and the battery isn't low.

I had this happen last fall. I know you checked your lights but did you check your high beams (the DRLs are high beams at half power, as you may know)? If only one comes on, replace the bad bulb and your DRLs should come back on.

Seriously? If one high beam bulb goes, both DRL's are off? Didn't know that and I'll check the high beams tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch duaner - much appreciated, especially for the fast response.

You're welcome. Right place at the right time I guess.

I'd have to check the schematics to see how they did it but, yeah, that's the way they wired it up.

I suppose it's a nice way to know if a bulb is out rather than finding out at night on the highway.

Ya, right after I posted in the SER section I realized I posted in the wrong place...

For future searchers that come across this thread, here's a link to a nice step-by-step on how to change a bulb on the Altima:

Duaner, you were right. Driver's side is dead. Thanks for the great info bud.

Hey Black_SER, sorry dude, I'm no electrical engineer... lol. I do remember some threads about this - if you search the 2002 2006 Altima forum you may find something. Be advised there are number of components involved and a different harness than what's on a typical american car. GL.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

Black SER,

As for wiring up DRL's, it looks like G35dalf is correct. Probably different/additional harnesses, a Daytime Light Control Unit, a switch for the parking brake, etc. I 'm not sure if anyone on here has tried it before or not. If you have the Service Manual, it shows quite a bit in there (that is all I'm looking at).

OK, replaced the driver's side high beam bulb today with a new one from the dealer, but it didn't work. The passenger side high beam does work. The daytime running lights are still not working as well.

I checked the wiring (as much as I could visually check) and I see no fraying or cuts to the wires and no evidence of parts rubbing against it. I've noticed no other electrical problems (no short) and the fuses are fine (I expected this since the passenger side is still working). The electrical harness for the bulb and connectors look clean (no dirt or anything like that)

I'm stumped. An easy bulb change has turned into a mystery...

Do you know how to use a multi-meter? If so, you should check for voltage at your headlight connector with the high beams on. That will tell you if you're getting power to your bulb or not. You might be one unlucky SOB who got a bad new bulb. Or you may have wiring problems farther up stream. If your main headlights are HID, make sure not to probe those contacts as they are going to be much higher voltage. I believe the high beams are just standard 12V halogen on our cars.

Ya, didn't think of the multimeter - good idea. I'll check it out. The mains are HID and def don't want to mess with them. They are a completely different socket so there shouldn't be a problem of accidentally checking the wrong connectors, but if I don't return to this forum, you'll know what happened...

I'm starting to think the dealer gave me the wrong bulb (even though the socket was the proper fit). Anyone have the part number for the high-beams on the SER? (I presume it's the same on the SE?).

As far as I can tell, the high beam bulb is the same for all--9005 (HB3).

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/f-q...eadlights.html

Neither the service manual nor owner's manual differentiate between 2.5, 3.5SE/SE-R bulbs for high beam.

Sucks that you haven't been able to get that going yet.
