Hoping you all can help me out with two issues I’ve been having. Got an 05 SE-R back in May (8 months ago) and have about 88,500 miles on it.
The first issue I have just started the other day and has to do with the oil pressure sensor/switch. I’ve seen some threads on this before but rather than bring back some of those which have multiple issues, I just thought I’d start one here.
Backstory: Took my car to a car wash on Friday and then on Saturday I started having issues with the gauge reading 0 and then 120 and jumping back and forth. Most of the reading here said it was the gauge. I drove it around a little more and there was no noise from the engine and car rode smooth. Sunday morning I had to drive it back to school which is 275 miles and it drove fine, except the gauge stayed at 0 and the light was on the whole time. Obviously the pressure is fine because my engine would have been fried a long time ago.
Talked to some repair places around me and based on what I read here and online, I thought it was going to be a $25ish part, but one repair shop told me since I had the gauge not just the dummy light on the dash, it was going to be $170 for the gauge sensor and $25 for the dash light sensor (oil can with drop) . That seemed crazy, so I called another place who told me it was just $25 and then I told him to make sure he was looking up the SE-R, not just the normal 3.5L, and then he said it was showing up different, and now was going to be $89 for the sensor (but only one part in total).
Questions:
1. Do I need one or two parts? Both the gauge and oil light are not working. Also, should this be in the ballpark of $25 or is it going to be a more expensive “gauge sensor”? I thought there was just one sending unit or sensor that controlled it all, got fried, and now needs a $25 part to replace.
2. Is this easy to replace? Can’t say I’m too handy with my car, but I have some friends who can help and are more knowledgeable. Is there a link on here that may help with a DIY?
This is the most pressing issue, but the second problem was a bit more scary and not concerning me much anymore, but maybe someone knows how to help if this is common?
Backstory: Bought the car in May, previous owner didn’t have much paperwork, so I took it in to get a full transmission flush (not just a top off or refill, but whole flush). After this happened, I noticed that sometimes the car jerked (took a second or two and then jerked) when I went from reverse to drive (my car is an automatic). This freaked me out because I wasn’t sure if this was a preexisting issue (only had the car for a week before I got the flush and I didn’t notice it on my test drive) or if it was because of the flush. Took it back into the dealer, of course I couldn’t replicate the issue because it didn’t happen all the time, and now it happens about once a month. They also checked the levels and I thought it may have happened because there was a low level and not all the fluid was getting around in the transmission. I’ve noticed that it happens when I’m parking at a mall parking lot a lot and what I’ve deduced from this is that driving around in low gear (looking for parking spots) triggers this issue. I’ll pull into the spot, put it in reverse to straighten out, and then when I put it into drive, it will take a second or two, and then jerk into drive and freak me out. When I come back a few hours later, the issue is gone. Also, car drives/shifts smooth, so it’s not an issue shifting gears. It only happens when I go from reverse to drive.
Questions:
1. Is this a known issue? I’m concerned about it, but not overly concerned now because it rarely happens. Is this common? Anyone know what I can do?
Didnt read thru all of this, but if your guage is reading zero then 120, just replace the oil pressure sensor in the upper oil pan by the oil filter on the passenger side. I had a very similar issue and all it turned out to be was the oil pressure sensor.

Is this like a $25ish part? This will fix both the gauge and the light on the dash? Thanks for your help.
Just kinda read about it....Have to be REAL careful with flushing these trannys with higher miles if your dont know it wasnt a service regularly performed. When you flush em, you run the risk of killing your tranny because the power flush can dislodge slug=dge and other build ups that may then freely float throughout and plug orifices that trans fluid needs to get to in order to cool the tranny. Has happened to alot of peeople.

That makes sense. Also, about the fix for the oil pressure sensor, do they sell the part for the SE-R without the gauge, or do I have to buy the sensor for the other 3.5L Altima and then use that?
Oil pressure sensor is the same for all 3.5 engines. Its not SER specific.

The oil pressure sending unit for the SE-R has three pins and the rest has one spade type connector. So, I would say that you have to make sure you buy the one specifically for the SE-R. It is a bitch to put in and take out! 24mm deep socket and a thin ratchet the only way to go here. Also the washer that go behind it, replace it with a 10mm or a 3/8" copper crush washer. It's the same one found on your brake line banjo fitting on the caliper side of the brake line.

Ugh! My car started having this exact same problem last night. I was on the highway driving home & my oil pressure dropped to 0. I freaked out and immediately pulled to the shoulder. As I was making my way from the far left lane, the oil pressure shot up to 120. Needless to say, I was freaking out. After finding this thread on my phone, I decided to limp the rest of the way home. My experience was the exact same. The gauge would read 0 then 120 then back down to 0. Seeing that red light come on is never a good thing. Thanks for the great info guys.

Glad this was able to help you out. I know that feel bro, it sucks. I freaked the hell out too. I still haven't gotten mine fixed yet, mostly because everyone keeps dicking me around with the price of this part and telling me it's more because I have a gauge vs. just the dash light.
Anyone have the part number? Could I just say I need the part for the Altima SE?
