Why does it seem like these are unreliable cars?

Every SE-R forum/group I look at I see people having so many different problems with these cars, anywhere from sensors to having to replace their whole engine replaced. I ask this because I'm currently at 104k and I haven't had a SINGLE problem with my car. *knock on wood* (Actually my oil pressure sensor went out a while back) but other than that nothing. So is my car just that great or are the problems gonna start rolling in since I'm over 100k?

I bought my SE-R with 90,000 miles and it's had some problems in the last 7,000 miles I've driven it:

- Low oil pressure at idle
- Creeky steering - could be steering rack, tie rods, etc
- Whiney / noisey timing chains / guides.
- Inconsistent clutch feel - mushy or stiff
- Rattling interior / sunroof
- Clicking axles

A lot of these issues are wear items for a car getting close to 100,000 miles, which I really don't mind replacing.

I'm just irritated that Nissan didn't do any kind of TSB for the whining timing chain / guides. I'm looking at a $1750 repair at the Nissan dealership ... makes a $700 timing belt job look a lot better.

Trade off? I like the cars interior, torque, looks and overall performance for a daily driver .. I'm hoping this car will last 100,000 more miles after I get these items serviced.

Rip it out. I used a Dremel tool.

Low oil pressure at idle is ok as long as the light doesn't come on, there's no stress on the engine when idle.
I guess changing the timing chain at 100,000 miles is normal.
Rattle noise, well new car would have them.
After all your maintenance, it should be good for another 100,000 miles.
I still have my 91 Acura Legend and has over 200,000 miles still going strong.

^ Light comes on when the car is completed warmed up or after a spirited drive sitting at idle. I don't think it's the sending unit or oil sensor, the gauge seems to be working perfectly fine (doesn't bounce between 0 - 120). I've heard it can be caused by a rear timing chain gasket blowing out into the oil pan causing low oil pressure.

I'm thinking of ripping out the oil pan and seeing if there are remnants of the gasket in there, that'll be a sure sign whether if it blew out or not.

THIS

Also, more and more members are second-hand, third-hand, etc. owners who do not know the maintenance and treatment history of their cars.

Let's face it, SERs are getting cheap, which means they get into the hands of people who abuse them (not to mention they're getting older) -- hence more problems to report on a forum

Orig owner here and no major problems at all (71k mi). IMO the Altima gives back what you put into it. If you maintain it (which doesn't require that much attention), then it will be a reliable car. (I realize non-orig owners don't have a choice in this matter)

I understand your frustration but there was a TSB. Mine started acting up in the 20k mile range and by 28k I was bringing it in. Considering how common of a problem it was (not just the VQ35) I think it should have almost been a voluntary recall. At least contact customers and notify them of the TSB because it is an expensive repair. Second and third hand buyers should have discovered the known issue/TSB in their research and even the most basic used car warranty would have covered the repairs.

I didn't drink enough coffee today lol, I meant *recall*.

Granted, the car does have nearly 100,000 miles I have no choice but to pony up the dough.

Sorry to hear that you have to out of pocket that Tyler.

Just out of curiosity.. Does anyone know the going rate for a new timing belt (and associated crap) on a Honda or Subaru? By 100k it would have already been mandatory service for those poor bastards.

I'd imagine around 500. My wife's little Hyundai has a timing belt and the dealer charged $360 for the belt/labor...

I do know one guy who had an 04 3.5 who just traded in his altima to avoid the repair, only had about 80k.

Everything I had read previously puts the total around $1000 for a V6 Honda and $700-1000 for a Subaru because they typically don't do just the belt.

* $360 is awesome by the way.

Yeah I know a lot of the belt replacements they do water pumps etc while they are in there and I'm sure it's a more complex operation then her little 1.6l machine...

$360 is reasonable no doubt but they also want you to do it in 60k/5 year intervals!

It is a repair monster at times but I believe it is because it is a performance car and we typically drive those harder. I've had every repair listed in the forums done to mine. It never ends. So what do I do? I go out and by a BMW that is in the shop at low mileage every three weeks for stupid little things but some folks may not notice and keep driving without a worry then trade in. I like having that extra power although it has come at a cost and I do all of my scheduled maintenance. Obviously there are folks here that have had no major issues so it might just be the law of averages and you only see the individuals that HAVE problems actually posting, not the ones that don't. How many threads do you see titled,"SER...no problems! Just wanted to let you all know!"? The Maximas are basically the same cars as well. If you look those up they have had the same problems our SERs have had. Most manufacturers build for performance and hope for reliability. It's like the old RCA TVs. They used to make the same set year after year (coming in as one of the most reliable with fewest repairs) while Zenith was pushing forward with technology. Lots of Zenith repairs as a result compared to RCAs. Thats why they only gave you a 90 day labor warranty with 1 year in parts (I used to repair those things). Pick yourself up a Toyota Corolla. I'll watch you in my rear view mirror as I pull away in my dealer service loaner! LOL!
