Full Size Spare

I've searched the forums, but I dont think anyone's done this yet.

I'm looking into getting a full size spare. I still have the stock OEM 17" SE rims, but I've checked on ebay and haven't found any on sale. I know that it comes with the VDC package, but i wasn't willing to pay the extra 5k to get everything else and the VDC.

Questions:

1. Has anyone done this yet?

2. Will it fit in the trunk with that plastic organizer tray or will i have to get something else?

3. Should I just get new rims and buy 5 of em? (i know that they usually come in sets of 4).

Any help is appreciated. Flaming is not.

good luck fitting it in there. normally they only give you enough space for the small tire. to fit a full size, you'll have to do some custom work i'm thinking..

I think you could easily fit a full size spare. The doughnut spare sits really low in the tire well and has tons of room around it. There is enough space to put a 1ft^3 sub box without raising the floor more than 1.3"

Do I look like a cat to you boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? DO YOU SEE ME EATING MICE?

it might fit the "full sized spare" which is still a donut actually. you would think it's the same size, but there has to be a reason why you lose 2 cubic feet of trunk space with the "full sized spare"

i think that the plastic organizer tray is only for the donut

get new rims if you want to, but what's wrong with a donut temporarily? a lot of punctures can be repaired in 15 minutes.

if you bought new rims, are you going to sell your oem ones?

I tried placing my 16" stock wheels there to use as my spare, it has plenty of room around it but the depth of the well is shallow that it sticks out about 2" and the cover does not lie flat with the floor, so you have a "bump" on yout trunk floor.

the main worry is that i take long road trips and if i ever got a flat, i don't want to have to drive 40 mph max on a donut to find the nearest tire repair center only to find it closed. it's also worth noting that i pretty much drive through boonies on these trips. i have roadside assistance, but i dont want to have to use it for a flat tire.

I'd rather just pop on another full size tire and rim and drive to my destination and then find a place to repair the old tire. throw it into the trunk and not have to worry about it.

IC, the "full sized tire" is not for you then. essentially, it is also a donut. the full sized just means that it is the same diameter, but I still don't think that you are supposed to go over 40 on it

I just checked my full size spare and looks exactly as the rolling OEM 17s, not a donut. With the spare, it raises the trunk surface about 1.5". So, I'm not sure if the trunk organizer will fit perfectly.

A couple things:
1) In my 3.5SL with VDC, the tire in the trunk is EXACTLY the same as the other 4.
2) I actually like that it bumps the floor up a little because it means that if I put stuff in the spots on either side of the bump, they don't roll around as much... and it's not a big enough bump to miss the space.

Langje, thanks for the response, but i think you're talking about something other than what I'm looking for. What I really want is essentially a full size spare meaning that it's not a donut. It's a tire with an OEM rim. Practically identical to the four that you have on your car right now.

Basically, not a full size donut.

Anyway, just looking for prices and etc. That bump in the middle of the trunk isn't really an incentive though. thanks for the feedback.

and welcome back gt haven't seen you around in awhile.

Smile Full Size

In Canada my 2.5S came with a full size tire which fits perfectly in the trunk, there is no problem with my 16" spare.

I know it's been incredibly busy at work. But I decided to come back because I need something to bide my time. As for the spare, you can definitely fit a full-size in there, and you won't miss the space, I promise. And it will make you feel better if you take a lot of long trips.

Umm, langjie, I think you got screwed. That is NOT the full sized spare. This is:
<edit> Reset the links to images now that I have enough posts. </edit>

You can see that it's a 17" Turanza from the SE. I've never actually pulled it out, but from the back it sure likes the rest of my wheels. (oops, should have pulled the jumper cables out before taking the picture to see it better.)

Do you have a VDC button like this on your dash?

As far as I know, the full size spare only came with the VDC option.

As for the bump part of this thread, this picture doesn't show it well, but you can see the white foam spacer on the board covering the full size spare. It's a bit over an inch thick. That's how far the board sits above the deck of the trunk. You can also see the spacer on the other side in the picture above.
