Back window shattered

Got home from work. Parked in my driveway, came back out an hour later to go to Subway shut the door and the back window shattered into a million little pieces. The car is not even 2 months old yet a lil over 2,000 miles. What do you Altima folks think? Defective window? Should I call the dealer. And hope it's covered. Need some advice.

If you explain the situation maybe? Otherwise insurance will cover it. I heard of this before with another Altima owner a few years back on this forum. I also read about it happening to someone in there Audi A4 prior to my Altima ownership as well when I use to be on an Audi forum. Could be a few things. I remember someone mentioning about the pressure in the cabin with changes in temperature.

That's strange. I wonder if the warranty would cover it. Thank you for not calling it a back windshield.

Taken from 2008 Warranty Information booklet (since that is my model year and you didn't specify what year we are talking about), Page 6 - "What Is Not Covered":

WHAT IS NOT COVERED
DAMAGE, FAILURES OR CORROSION DUE TO
ACCIDENTS, MISUSE OR ALTERATIONS

This warranty does not cover damage, failures or corrosion
resulting from:
■ Accident, theft, fire, driving through water (including engine
water ingestion) or misuse, which includes racing of any
sort whatsoever (Proper use is outlined in your OWNERS
MANUAL).
■ Alteration, tampering or improper repair.
■ Installation of non-Nissan approved accessories or
components.
■ Improper installation of any Nissan approved or aftermarket
accessory or component.
Glass breakage, unless resulting from defects in material
or workmanship.

■ Normal wear and tear, including dings, dents, chips or
scratches

With the glass in a million little pieces you may have some trouble showing it broke due to a defect.

Good news! Matt Castrucci Nissan came through!

I took it to the Service department this morning. I went in knowing that they were not going to stand by me. They explained that they had never heard of this happening to a Nissan. But then they said since I was a new Nissan Altima owner they were willing to do a Goodwill recommendation and replace the window at no charge. They even set me up with a free rental car. Enterprise rent a car gave me a Dodge Caliber that is total crap! Can't complain though. I have only great things to say about Matt castrucci in Dayton Ohio!!

That dealership is a class act for doing that for you. Congrats. It never hurts to ask!

Tempered glass in back

I think it would be safer to use laminated glass all around. It was all over my boys car seat. Glad he was not in it when it happened. I really need to get it tinted. That would have kept it from shattering like that.
