recommended oil type / brand for a 2.5?

I have a 2008 2.5SL, its coming up on 55,400 which will mark 5,000 miles since the last time the oil was changed. I've owned the car for 1 month.

In the past, I have typically purchased Maxlife (for vehicles over 75,000 miles) 10w30 from Autozone, but I think 5w/30 is recommended for this altima's right?

recommendations are appreciated and not sure if I would actually experience a difference in performance or smoothness based on the oil used.

it'd be a good investment to switch to full synthetic if you do long commutes and for a lot of stop and go, but if you don't do a lot of stop and go or have a short commute, stick to conventional. Since you're at the 55-60k mile mark, you may want to switch to 5w-30 high mileage oil.

I drive 50-60 miles round trip each day...probably 70% highway, 30% city...but the city is a pain in the butt sometimes.

I have been running Amsoil XL with a Wix filter for 10k miles. I sent in a sample last time, and they said I had plenty of life left in the oil.

I just signed online for practically the same question and found your post; I have used 5W30 in my 2008 since new but I'm now in a remote area of Honduras and only thing I could buy is Castrol 10W30 in this small town. Now I show my ignorance i guess, but; what would be the diffrence in 10W and 5W I really have no idea; oil had to be changed so I had to put it in today I was at 4000 mi on the last change 4 months ago; thats pushing it I think...

I first used 10W30 Castrol GTX with Fram filters for about the first 5 or 6 oil changes at 6K miles I then switch to 10W30 Castrol Edge with K&N filters and now change at 12K.

5w is thinner oil then 10w during cold(below freezing) temperatures, so as long as you don't live in below freezing climate you can use 10w30 without problems.

first number is the winter viscosity, second number normal temperature viscosity. so 5w will flow through viscosity filter where 10w won't because it won't be thin enough.

I knew 5w was thinner, but had no clue you weren't supposed to use 10w in below freezing climates. I've used 10w30 Maxlife high milieage oil in the past for my other cars and things ran ok I guess.

Is there an actual performance / quality difference between

Valvoline vs Royal Purple vs Castrol vs Penzoil vs Mobile 1?

I know someone mentioned if I am at 55,000 to go ahead and go for the high mileage version.

just got done changing the oil. Used a FRAM extra guard oil filter + Valvoline Max LIfe 5W30 High Mileage.

The oil was last changed an a Nissan Dealership about 5k miles ago..and man, was it dark and dirty. Was thick too.
