Just got my 09 altima SL a few days ago. I absolutely love the car so far, but noticed a programming flaw. If the car is started, and the keys are taken away from the vehicle, it does not kill the engine. This makes me never want to stop at a gas station ever again b/c it's almost too easy for someone to just hop in, hit the button and roll even if the key is in my pocket. Even if they won't be able to start it back up again later without the key, the car is still gone.
To me, this is a horrible flaw that needs to be addressed asap by Nissan. Anyone else on this? Or am I missing something?
That's really no different than leaving your keys in the car. The majority of car thefts are from people who leave the car running at a convenience store, gas station, anything that's a quick stop. I never understood the point of leaving the car running... ever.
What you can do is if you have the keys with you and the car is still running, you can still hit the button on the door handle and it will work as normal with a full lock/unlock function.
Honestly, who leaves their car running when they get gas?
Unfortunately it's VERY common. It's not even that though. It's where the car is left running when they park to go into the convenience shop real fast, not at the gas pump.
Like I said, I'm pretty sure that's where most of the car thefts start.

That's what I was thinking...if you don't have a car with the ikey and leave your car running at a gas station the key will still have to be in the ignition, and then you are really screwed if someone steals it since then they can start it back up when they shut it off...
At least if our cars that are running gets stolen, they won't be able to start it back up if it gets shut off or runs out of gas...

I think some insurance companies even consider it negligence if that's the case if the car gets stolen. I'm also pretty sure that some states, or counties, actually made leaving your car running unattended illegal.
I imagine that squits04 is talking about stopping for gas, turning the car off, having the fob in his pocket, but still being in proximity such that someone could hop in, press the start button, and drive away.
I'm guessing it couldn't happen. I don't think the proximity range is that far such that someone could hop it without you getting a hold of them. Especially when the fuel door is on the driver's side of the car.
I would agree though, that it does seem like it would be more safe if the car automatically turned off if the fob left proximity.
When I walk away from mine, the security beeps and the message comes up on the dash, Key not in car or something like that. Have you tried to drive it with the keys away from the car?
I'll start it in the AM and go back inside and it does that.

You're right... sort of. I'm confused though. First off:

So, I'm confused too.
But no. I can't even turn the car in ACC or ON from outside the car if, say, I reached through the window, or reached in while the door was open.

1. It is a security sensing device and will not kill the engine, autolock, or anything else when you elave the proximity of the vehical.

2. The key needs to be inside the "cabin" of the vehical to be able to start the car.
Even if they won't be able to start it back up again later without the key, the car is still gone.
3. True

Nissan probably did not set the system to kill the car while its running when the key is out of range because say your keyfob dies while you are driving for some mysterious reason or something temporarily interferes with the signal (like a cellphone/airplane communications /police radio,etc..) , if it was set up the way you want it your car would kill itself while YOUR driving thinking the key is gone. I personally like the way it is set up and you can lock the door while the car is running as long as you and the key are outside of the vehicle i do it all the time when i need to run into a store real quick or back into my house when i warm up my car in the winter.
yeah uhh- ur car cant start unless the key is INSIDE the vehicle its a point frame system...

can't start the car unless keys are inside the cabin, even if you're standing outside your drivers door car won't start till you get inside. i actually think this push button start is one of the best anti theft systems invented. i've yet to hear of a car get stolen that has push button ignition.
