So I'm curious, what's so bad about the ContiProContact tires that came on my 2.5 S coupe? I've driven on a lot of different tires, and after 6,000 miles they seems pretty good. The ride isn't too hard, the noise isn't too bad, no complaints in the rain, and they seem to have pretty good grip. I haven't had them in the snow yet but don't have any concerns about it.
Yet most of the reviews I've read (such as those on TireRack.com) are pretty negative. Am I just not seeing it yet because I only have 6,000 miles on the set? Do they degrade and get pretty bad as they wear down a bit?
mine are horrible! i am going to swap them as soon as i get new rims. I live in LA and everyone drives like an idiot. i have been in many situations where i needed to avoid an accident and these tires just screech and hollar and lose a little traction. but ya they just scar the crap out of me. i had bridgestone all terrain tires on my Infinity Qx4 and they were quieter and had more traction than these crap shoots.

I think that most people who have the most complaints about the tires are people who test the tire performance under high stress conditions, like swerving, quick stopping and starting, essentially pushing the tires to the limit and have found that they've got a pretty low limit.
I also think the tires are fine, but that's just for everyday commuting to and from work.

That's what I was wondering. I don't submit the tires to high-stress / performance conditions. I don't drive like a cotton-top or anything, but I'm mostly on the highway for my 70 mile round-trip daily commute.
I find the tires to produce a normal amount of road noise, they seem to be pretty stable when cruising along at 80 mph, and in the few instances when I've had to brake hard and swerve (once when a truck blew a retread, another when a deer crossed in front of me, and one time when an accident occurred about 50 - 75 yards ahead), I thought the response, control, and braking were pretty damned good.
Granted, I've only got 6,000 miles on them. So maybe it'll all go in the crapper when they really start to wear?
those tires will never wear if you drive them normal because they are like 65% plastic and 35% rubber but then again if it rains dont think you wont slide left and right
i dont know about the 3.5 but the 2.5 tires are horrible.
but then again i like spinning tire =)
First of all continental tires are some of the very best tires in the world. Go to Germany and see what brand BMW Mercedes and Audi are using. Second the OEM tires we get are not the top model but there not the bottom either. If you bitch about these tires in the wet or winter and you go out and buy a set of much wider tires with a lower profile you'll be eating your words. These tires are a very good compramise for an all season tire. Try to remember you bought an S or SL not an SE. You can't have it all.

The Bridgestones that came on the SE's are crap too...true they aren't the worst, but hardly the best for a 270hp car...tons of road noise, lots of flex going around corners, and very poor treadwear, although the treadwear started off decent...I've lost about 2/32 in the last 2 months for some reason, and my driving habits haven't changed any...I only lost 4/32 in the first year and a half I had the car...They are supposed to be a 50k tread wear tire, yeah right...I'm past half tread wear and I have 25k on the car...I have about 2/32 left before they are done...The only good thing I can say about them is the first year I had the car, they were outstanding in the snow, didn't have any issues at all...not sure how they'll be at this treadwear level this winter in the snow though...

Mine are done with about 32K on them but if you want razor sharp steering now is the time to enjoy. The performance on dry road conditions is as good as it gets with the wear levels were at. Go install some $200 dollar/piece Michelins and see for yourself. So again you cannont have it all! BTW Racing tires only start with about 5/32 on them.

The thing that is the worst is the noise with the stock tires though...driving on concrete highways, we have to raise our voices so we can hear each other...I've never has such a noisy tire on a car before...
And IMO Michellins are over priced...There are many many other brands with better tires that are a lot less than Michellins...
