Navigation locks when driving?

I used to have an 08 Altima and the navigation would lock out when driving. Really didn't like that so just wondering if anything had changed in the 2013 version.

If not are the voice commands usable and is there a way to bypass the lockout feature?

Yes, navigation input is locked out when the vehicle is in motion:

If the new Altima's navigation unit is similar to other Nissan built-in navigation systems the work-around will involve temporarily disconnecting the speed sensor line. Maybe Car Kit Company or Prestigious Society will offer a navigation bypass kit for the 2013 Altima like the ones they have for other Nissan vehicles.

How do you disconnect the speed sensor line? I know there was some sort of procedure for the Maxima a while back.

I can understand for safety reason to lock it when driving. However, Nissan should have it unlocked when the passenger seat sensor registered a front seat passenger. There is no reason why a front seat passenger should not operate the GPS when the driver is driving.

My wife cannot work a GPS. Often when we are driving in unknown areas she drives and I navigate. We learned that many years ago when we were driving in SCCA rallies. Even if there is a passenger that does not mean the driver will not be looking at the screen.

I am having enough problem trying to avoid the texter in my area. I do not see how any sane person thinks that they can text and drive at the same time. I am rarely out driving that I do not encounter living proof that one person cannot do two things at once and give their full concentration to either.

That's something I've often wondered as well. But I think for liability/legal reasons, until there is a way to confirm the passenger is actually programming it, most manufacturers will fall on the side of safety and disable it.

My previous car was an 05 Acura TL that allowed 'on the fly' GPS programming. I have to admit I programmed WAY too many addresses while moving.

They have a kit now, I installed it in this post:
http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/201...an-altima.html

It may be possible to be done with a simple switch, but since I have the kit someone else will have to figure that one out. I really didn't want to hack up any factory wires or figure out wire assignments so it was worth it to me to just buy the kit. It works well...

For nearly $200 the kit isn't worth it. Use the send to car feature.

I did discover, quite by accident, that even if the typing doesn't work, you can still put ina destination using the voice commands. It's a little tedious, but no more than trying to type on the touchscreen, and it works at any speed. (At least it does in my SL)
