How is the Average MPG on the dash calculated?

Does anyone know if the Average MPG on the Altima's display represents from mile 1 or last trip reset (don't think so) or since last start or ???

for example...On my ole hybrid Camry the avg mpg represented the miles from last start of engine.

Each time you push the reset button it recalculates the average. (I do this for every tank full) If you were to never reset it.. then it will calculate from mile one.

there is also a real-time estimate.

I hope this answers your question.

I only reset mine when I am going to take a trip and want to get the true highway mpg. This keeps my mpg calculation much more accurate.

Yes and thanks.

I almost always to a "trip a" reset to zero on fillups. Just didn't seem like the avg mpg adjusted appropriately...especially given the avg mph didn't look right either (did almost 8 hours at 76mph with a few slower miles getting to/from the interstate).

Thanks again and I'll definitely keep an eye on the avg mpg.

Not the "trip A" or "trip B" reset. It is the fuel economy counter reset.

My "Miles to Empty" indicator is throwing me weird numbers. After my first fillup I got 550 miles. After my 2nd fillup, I got about 380 miles. I am down to half a tank, and I'm at 360 miles. But it's been jumping all over the place this week, as low as 310 and hovered at 350 for a bit.

Don't know about Altima but on other Nissan cars the miles to empty estimate is based on your recent fuel consumption rate. If you were in stop and go traffic, your miles to empty number will be low. If you then drive on highway, you will actually starts to see miles to empty increases.

If you want to know what it really is, fully fill up and re-set the trip. when you fill up, fill again to max, record how many gallons and divide the trip milage by the gallons to got the true mpg. the dash isnt truly accurate

Hold the menu button on the steering wheel to reset once you get to the mpg screen.
