I imagine that squits04 is talking about stopping for gas, turning the car off, having the fob in his pocket, but still being in proximity such that someone could hop in, press the start button, and drive away.
I'm guessing it couldn't happen. I don't think the proximity range is that far such that someone could hop it without you getting a hold of them. Especially when the fuel door is on the driver's side of the car.
I would agree though, that it does seem like it would be more safe if the car automatically turned off if the fob left proximity.
