Shifting into neutral at signals

Hey guys,
I'v read up on some articles published by car review sites that you should shift into neutral at long red light signals and other places to take the wear off the torque converter. I've been in a habit of shifting into neutral (in automatic car) at stop signs and signals everywhere. Does this technique help at all or does it just cause further wear and tear on transmission and cause it to fail early?

I know this is obviously true on manual cars, but does it have an impact on automatics? Also hear you can get some better MPG's off of it too.
