I'm pretty sure that our cars have an automatic fuel cutoff so that when you aren't on the accelerator you aren't using fuel (don't get how that exactly works cuz the car is still on.). Also when you shift into neutral, the cutoff doesn't kick in so you end up using more fuel. This is what I've learned from a fuel economy forum.
