I do this all the time....If you drive a 2.5, you should know why....
If you're trying to save gas, shift into N and then turn the engine off at the long light....This I also do a lot. I only do it if it isnt hot out and when the light is longer then 2 mins.
I dont think that just shifting into N will save much gas, if any. As for the wear on the transmission, I don't think it will do much more harm then regular shifting does anyway. Just dont N drop it, like said above.
