considering a 2004 se-r spec V

I'm looking for a car to do some auto X this summer.

I came upon a 2004 se-r spec v with 65 000 miles on it.

I didn't know much about these car but been doing reading about them for the past week and it seems like a good contender for what I want to do.

I talked to a friend who had one and he warned me about the precat failiure on these cars. I also read on the web about it.

My question is, should I keep this from buying this car ? Is there irreversible damange that might have been done to the car because of this ? Is there any ways to know if damage was done to the engine ?

Overwhelming responses !

I've decided to go with my first idea for the auto X car. My first idea was to get a mini cooper, so I'll continue my quest for a mini. The Spec V was at a nice price but not really what I needed.
