Whine when starting, smell of burning

I have a 2002 SE-R, no mods. Lately (last month or so) I have noticed that there was a slight whine when I started the car, but as time went on its become more and more pronounced. When I stop at a light, it starts up, but its not really noticeable when driving. I also can get a smell of burning, almost like metal being ground. (that CAN'T be good)

Not sure what it can be, but its getting worriesome. Before I take it to a garage, can anyone give me an idea what it might be?

Its standard, 153 Km, changed the oil about 6 weeks ago.

It sounds like your alternator is going bad.

Check your belts...could be a bearing starting to go bad, as in seizing. This happened to me on my Frontier with the AC clutch bearing. Sometimes I would smell something burning, and one day more burning than normal then the AC belt broke.
