Datalogging w/ CarPC

I know the ECU sub-forum is still new but I was wondering if anyone has or plans to permanently install their ECU monitor/logger with their carPC as the interface. Ive been deciding on this for awhile and after finding the wealth of info. in this forum im going ahead with that. I was just hoping to find any inherent or possible problems that might come up with this setup.

One i can allready forsee is the visibility on a 7" touchscreen. The resolution kinda sux, so im thinking of creating a custom interface or skin in conjuction with one of the skins im using for my carPC (pic below). I can easily place an OBD button on my interface. What do you guys think?

The plan originally was to use real time tuning/monitoring via a stand alone unit for a turbo application. The reason i say a turbo app is b/c I wouldnt want to have to shell out the amount of cash needed for a stand alone unless I was going all out. But in light of recent findings on these forums and other sites, I can start this project now and still be able to keep the same hardware when I go turbo. Still dont fully understand how useful this will be in the turbo app but Im working on it.

As far as using burners I plan on getting Map Swithcing Module that allows you to switch between 4 of your preprogrammed maps. Once everything is setup correctly I dont see why I would need more than that. Still learning though. In any case I have heard that some ppl use the burners with consistent reliability.

With a car PC, You could use any of the Data logging software, But for emulating most emulators for the EEPROMS are 8bit and with the daughterboard we use it uses to 8bt EEPROMS =16bit total. You would need to use 2 romulators or 2 ostrich's and would have to be able to snyc them with software, Several people that I know of have done this and I can find more info.

I have spoke to craig moates at moates.net about building a 16bit Emulator, sorta like to ostrichs in one unit without the need for software to Snyc them. He is currently researching Nissan Stuff and If there is enough demand he would accomadate our needs.

adapting it to a touchscreen is a cool idea. I am currently helping a buddy Install a Dell 15" LCD SVGA into the Dash on his 1984 corvette. it has a small cube computer we built for it. with a Small keyboard and Trackball mounted to a hinged Tray. So it its out of sight and not in the way when needed. He had a small 7" screen but it has too hard to see and Use for tunning so we adapted. LOL 15" is Nice.

Wow!!! (about 15" LCD in 84 Corvette)))))

I am totally FOR 16 bit emulator, and if no need for Synch them it is going to be a dream!) But i think it is going to be really difficult to connect that to a PC!? Have no idea how it is going to look like!

I read all of the treads here and most in SR20 forums but never find good explanation of 2 romulators or 2 ostrich's setup's! Any links?

P.S. You think i should bug somebody at moates.net about 16 bit emulator? - LOL

If just data logging, you would need a consult Cable, that attaches to the Connector under dash, and the other end would connect to a DB9 or USB. Several different ones made.

For emulating would need a daughter board in the ecm then the emulators connect to the daughter board. then the emulator(s) connect to the computer by DB9 or USB depending on which one you choose.

There are a couple people on Hybridka.com forums running dual ostrichs and romulators.

Wish i could be more percise but work comes early.

I have found the serial connector to consult and usb to consult connectors. As far as the visibility of a the 7" touchscreen it just plain sux when using standard windows programs. I was hoping i could play with some of the software and and "re-skin" to fit better as having a 15" isnt an option in my altima .

Maybe im confused but I thought that the package that PLMS sells would allow for 4 maps when coupled with their Map Switching Modules. Here is an exert from their site

The switcher consists of a small box (34x60x15mm) which connects to the daughterboard via a 4 way ribbon cable and can be mounted anywhere in the car using Velcro (supplied). It features high brightness indicator LED's to show which map is selected and it remembers which map you last used so the correct one is run next time the car is started. The daughterboard will work fine without the switcher - it just defaults to map 1.

The daughterboard they sell will allow you to switch between 4 different tunes, when you purchase there map switching module. But for data logging you would still need a Consult cable.

now there are several different software available. Calumsult for dataloggin

To modify the tune you would need a bin editor. Like Live Edit, Rom Editor, tunerpro.

I like tunerpro, because I used it on my GM Cars. But there are definiton files availabe for nissan using tuner pro.

I think I said that right. You might want to Read through the Intro to ECU Programming in the post labled Tunning Guide Book and FAQ.

Okay, after alot of reading and I do mean alot of reading I have learned alot but at the same time am still kinda confused about this whole thing. Let me state my goals first. This will all be done from the built in computer I have in my car using the 7" touchscreen and then a laptop for the tuning & troubleshooting.

Goals
datalogging
tuning
real time 4 switchable maps (turbo)
troubleshooting
in-car monitoring

Here is what I think I need to do this:

Materials
Consult -> USB
Bin Editor (Live Edit,Rom Edit)
Monitoring (Calumsult)
PLMS Daugterboard
PLMS Header
PLMS EPROMS
PLMS 4 Switching Module
*Im going skin monitoring software to match the above in car software.

Does this sound like a pretty complete list?
