How to tune my Altima and check/clear codes

I'm trying to figure out a way to check and clear CEL codes as well as tune my car a bit(it is running quite rich). I drive a 1999 Altima GXE so I was hoping that I could find a Consult cable to plug into my car's OBD2 port into my laptop and from there, check/clear codes and slightly tune the AF ratio to lean it out a bit(but still keep it safely tuned).

Does anyone know of a good cable for our cars? Also, what sort of program would I need on my laptop to do this?

Thanks.

you cant tune a stock ecu like that. you can however get a consult cable and check out most of the stuff going on in your car. if your car is running rich, the ecu is not your problem, these cars do run slightly rich higher up, but not thatttt rich. as far as i know the only way for you to get your ecu tuned, is JWT or if you wanted to go more extreme, AEM EMS. as of right now, theres not any way for us to tune obdII ecus (altho it should be possible... idk)

So no one has figured out a way to tune it using a Consult cable and a datalog program on a laptop? There must be a way to tune it considering it is OBD2.

I'm interesting in knowing that as well. I doubt we can do much at as as far as tuning on a stock ecu but being able to hook up my laptop to my ecu for diagnostics would be nice.

edit: ouch, sorry didn't realize I was bumping a year and a half old thread....

ALL OBD2 ECUs can be hooked up to a laptop to run diagnostics and do log recording, monitoring, etc. The OBD2 adapter that I have and would recommend is the ElmScan 5 USB (ScanTool.net - Products). Team that up with DigiMoto (Digimoto OBDII Vehicle Diagnostic Software) or something similar and you have some serious power in your hands.

You won't be able to program the ECU for tuning purposes. But you'll have a universal OBD2 scanner with lots of functionality.

Yes, you'll have to go with something that is fully programmable.

What an SAFC2 should work and probably be the most economical if paired with a wideband O2 sensor and dyno time?

One option to the Consult-III is Augoenginuity. Go to autoenginuity.com and look through their stuff. The basic/generic package is $250 ($210 per ebay) and for an additional $100, you can purchase a Nissan-extended package that you can alter ignition timing, reset AFR, perform the idle-relearn, etc. There are all kinds of Nissan-specific tests you can perform on actuators. I think it has all the body and chassis failure codes. Seems to be a very solid little gadget. I think I'm definitely going to get one.

Not as extensive as Consult-III, but then again, nothing will be other than the CIII.

Consult III can do the job but for ~ 6000.00 US $.
