Very rarely does the EGR valve dies altogether. Instead, the EGR stem gets badly clogged up with carbon and stays wide open and when you decelerate to a stop sign you will get an extremely bad idle. Sometimes the EGR stem manages to close but leaves a small crack opened because of the carbon deposits and that causes erractic idle. In other words, the idles is good a few seconds and then it occasionally drops and feels like the engine has misfired. Either way, you can use something like carb cleaner and a toothbrush to clean it out.

There are other areas that gets clogged up as well. It has been discussed before.

I recently fixed an EGR problem in my car and here is the link,

i took mine off 2 years ago and blocked it off.I just dont like the idea of extra carbon build up in my intake and all.Havent had a bit of problems, well with that system anyways.Strange "ignition signal" code that not a single person knows about.

found a clog in the oraphis (sp?) that comes off the egr manifold to the egr sensor, this adds back pressure to the canister but it was clogged.

ill see if the cel hits again

I know this is an old post, but great approach to this problem. While everyone was pointing me towards my ignition ( where i was also recieving a"mystery" code for... but i could not find anything wrong with my distributor or any other part.

The problems you describe sound very familiar. How would i go about removing the EGR completely???

He should tell us if it does. Seems to me like it would because the EGR temperature sensor wouldn't get exhaust gas hitting on it and that would alert the ECU to a bad EGR system.

actually i know someone else who has done it and his not suffering with gas milage. remember the EGR system is putting hot exhaust gas back into the intake manifold.
