Rob's old SMT6 fiasco! Results within.... *Dynos!*

For those who have been around you know about how Rob was the first one to adopt the PP SMT6 piggyback. Kenop purchased it from Rob, then I purchased it from Kenop.

Hokay, I have a really big pent up rage bubble in my head that I would love to spew out all over these forums but as the saying goes, a picture is worth a million words.

Here is my "pre-tuned" SMT6 module which makes your car *faster* from Rob:

SMT6 Dyno: 216hp/224tq

Full Size

This was my first run Friday afternoon. I think I coughed up a hairball when I saw the A/F ratio drop off the way it did. Started pretty good then just went lower....11....10....and soon it was off the damn charts. The tuner there said he's only seen something like this with a heavily boosted car. Made me give a big "WTF Mate". So here is a word of advice, NEVER EVER use anyone elses fuel mappings even if it's the same car with the same mods!

Stock ECU Dyno: 234hp/237tq

Full Size

My car redeemed itself. I tore that SMT6 out of there and put in the test peice to run the car in it's stock mode. It put out the exact numbers I've been hoping for, thus my anger turned into some eased discomfort.

Stock ECU Air/Fuel Readout

Full Size

I had him print this out so I can show you guys how you can take a stock fuel curve and how tuners create more power. As you see, the stock fuel map isn't....really all that bad. (Not Rob's SMT6 bad, just not tweaked) The tuner pretty much explained that from 4,000 rpms till redline he would lean it out to make the extra power. The ECU is dumping too much fuel into the cylinders during those RPMs, this is preventing detonation as that is the death of an engine if it runs too lean. Equals shitty gas economy and a loss of power, lean it out a decent amount but within safe parameters and anywhere from 5-15 whp will be seen throughout the above powercurve.

Why don't I have my SMT6 tuned now and why am I not making 250whp (Goal)? Long ass boring story, end result was to modify the unit I had to use another PP distributors software (This is a SMT6-D, tunable only with the software from IDA Automotive). Bob@IDA Automotive...grrr... refused to help me; making my investment in Rob's SMT6 a paperweight. Godfrey A. from PerfectPower / DS solved my situation, great guy. If anyone has issues with their SMT6 email me and I'll point you in the right direction.

So yeah, why it's not working. The SMT6 was cleared and I lost all of my global settings, I don't have the proper global settings thus my RPMs aren't being read correctly. (This is bad) So the tuner allowed me to take car the home until I solve the RPM issue and then I'll bring it back to finish the tuning and get the car where it should be.

What a nightmare....when I do achieve the 250whp on my current setup is when I'll get that bigass grin on my face and realize it's all worth it.

Till then!

well live and learn.. it was toss up that your car would perform the same as Robs, but we know all motors with same mods dont always perform the same. Hopefully you'll get all worked out and make the investment salvageable

That is why I like the SAFC II. There are many more tuners available.

Good luck with it, when it is right it will all be worth it.

I know, I went with the SMT6 as it's different and I love the laptop connectivity features it uses. I can do real time data logging and switch between my daily driver and track map without doing anything but clicking a button.

I'm a computer nerd so this went right up my alley. I know a few with the S-AFCII and I like the LED display and what not, both units get the same job done...just different paths.

I love the smt6. but I heard better things for the 7. the only issue is the tunning software. the same problem with cp-e. is going to be imposible to tune it on a different place than their shop.

The SMT7 was created to compliment the SMT6, both have their applications and the 7 wouldn't do anything better for our Altimas than the 6 does.

I think your info the SMT is incorrect regarding the software to tune it. Rob's SMT6-D was purchased from Bob@IDA as a proprietary piggyback ECU. You can purchased the SMT6-I which is almost cheaper and will allow you to do whatever you want with it.

I also have obtained the software to tune my SMT6-D freely, just had to go through the right channels and find someone who was willing to help me out. Nobody should have to do this though, the SMT6i is the only thing that people here on the boards should purchase and then consult me or another member with the SMT6 for proper settings.

the smt7 has more options (I don't mean to t/j).
like ignition retard or advance,
remove the speed limiter,
LAUNCH CONTROL An extra input allows traditional launch control. Once activated the ignition is retarded until the specified RPM is reached under full throttle. This allows the “spinning up” of a turbo on the start line, and once the clutch is released the ignition is advanced again to the normal point
MEMORY and MAPS The SMT7 has two COMPLETE maps, unlike the SMT6, which shared the global setup

Good luck with the tunning hope everything works out for the best.. I think tunning a car IMO is one of the most important things you can do and if not done correctly can mess up a lot things...

Hope things go well and you meet your expectations... and I really hope is not that much more pain to adjust once the new plenum is released.

Good Luck... Fx..

It seems like the SMT-6/7 piggyback controllers are the next best thing to a full standalone system, not to mention they are much cheaper and easier to setup. One should know however, that one guy's basemap will not be the same for another individual.

Some settings may crossover between the two cars and can help to establish a working baseline (seems more critical in a full standalone system) and get the car running OK, but dyno time is always needed.

Keep us posted on your progress. I considered the SMT-6 for my Neon, but ended up going with a simple S-AFC because the car wasn't in need of major fuel tuning ability at that point.

That SMT-6 Was also tuned piggybacked to a TECHNOSQUARE ECU. Which already has revised fuel maps. THE SMT corrected the TECHNOSQUARE's F***ed up A/F ratios. That thing needs to be tuned to an individual car.

Guess no one remembers those threads. Thats why it was soo off. That will make you plenty of power

I don't believe Rob had the cams installed at the time of the SMT6 tuning process, at least thats what he told me when I asked awhile ago.

I was told it was tuned for intake / headers / catback. Was never told about the tuning for the Technosquare ECU, bah. Oh well, it'll be fixed soon enough.

There is a filter that I need to install on the ignition wire to fix my RPM flucuations, I'll have this all done and ready for when the SSV manifold arrives so I can get dynos of the manifold (before / after) and the result of the SMT6 tuned for I/H/E/P/M. (I'm guessing in the low 260ish whp range).
