Slightly deeper. Not very noticiable. I'm just always listening for it thats why I hear it, I imagine most people won't even notice.

Also, here are just a couple of the most FAQs:

----------------------------------------------

Q: What does the VIAS/SSIM Block Plate do?

A: This is strictly a block plate kit for those that want to remove their VIAS (Variable Induction Air Control System). This will hurt low end power, but since you are removing an obstruction, it will help top end.

The other use for this block plate and considered the best option as far as performance is known as the SSIM (Secret Sauce Intake Manifold). That name was created years ago by a member of the Maxima discussion forums. This involves cutting the shelf out of the main chamber of the upper intake manifold and removing the VIAS assembly. This will still lose a little low end power, but the gains in the top end are very noticeable. It's definitely a modification that is worthwhile.

Q: What is the difference between the two VIAS Block Plates that are offered?

A: One kit comes with a block plate that is fully machined out of a solid piece of 6061 billet aluminum with the NWP logo in raised lettering. The plate is fully machined on all sides and the front and back. Then it is tumbled and polished by hand. The tolerances and quality do not get any better than this.

The Basic VIAS Block Plate Kit (sells for $40.00) comes with a plate that is machined from a 1/4" sheet of 6061 billet aluminum and the logo is engraved instead of raised. So it is not machined on the front and back to give it a perfect surface. But, the surface tolerance is plenty flat enough for it to seal on the manifold with a gasket. It is then tumbled and cleaned by hand.

Here is a comparison:

Raised logo and fully machined with no machining lines for $48.95:

I ordered mine this morning, looking forward to getting it installed. Taz has the info on the racinglineperformance Y pipe. I just got word from him yesterday that they are almost ready, just getting the flex sections attached and they should be available between Sept. 10th and the 17th. I am going to buy one for sure and then it is just a matter of time to get it installed. But, I am hoping the gains from removing the butterfly valve will give me some added power combined with my full catback and JWT intake.

Just got mine in today and installed it. I'm going to break-up my review into two parts: Installation details and then a drive review.

The directions don't quite match up to my '06 Altima, but that's ok. If you have an '06 you'll need RTV because the stock gasket will not work with the block off plate (it is a rubber gasket formed within a grove on the original). The bolt that people talk about is difficult to get at on bottom , and you really have gotten to loosen up a lot of the wiring harness, to include detaching even as far back as the spark plug harness. That allowed me to slowly pull the wiring harness up enough to sneak a 2" long 12mm socket in and get to it. All of my 12mm wrenches were too long to allow for any action on that bolt because the space is so tight. After getting the VIAS unit out, putting a line of RTV on the plate and installing it is a no-brainer and all you have to do is plug your harness back in and put your engine cover back on.

After letting the RTV gasket set for about 45 minutes, I go for a cruise this evening. It was about 65 degrees in Minnesota. I pull the 5 speed out and cruise through the neighborhood relatively calmly (<2500rpms). I don't feel any difference from stock. When on more open roads I open it up a bit in 1st and 2nd gears, and right away I notice the difference. Coming from a VQ30 Maxima, I have been a bit dissapointed with how the Altima's 3.5 runs above 4k rpm. Although certainly powerful, I always thought it felt kind of "flat" and a bit wheezy when WOT. With the plate installed there is a certain change in character. It now seems to rush past 5k rpms and keeps spinning quickly. It feels faster and, more importantly, is a lot more fun to drive when it comes time to step on it.

As far as low end power, here's my take on its response now. One thing that I have always loved about the VQ35 and the 5sp tranny is how it just goes no matter what rpm it is at. Especially how the car just pulls solidly between 2k-4k without even having to give it much gas. With the NWP plate I notice only a very small amount of loss. I drove around torquing the engine around between 2-4k having fun for a long time because I really couldn't tell if it had lost any, but I would say it has lost a very very small amount of it's twist down low.

I value "usable, real world, right now" power and that's why I got the big V6, and I like to run it up to 6k often too. The NWP really compliments what I like and I would totally recommend it. 99% of low end grunt and a noticable rush in the high rpms added.

Yeah, I also just put the block plate on an '06. The bottom bolt was also difficult for me to reach because of the wiring, but after getting access to the bolt it was easy.

I had a great opportunity to break it in. I went to visit my friends at their new house which was about an hour and a half drive on a 75MPH speed limit (that's high for Colorado). But since alot of people don't drive that fast I was able to step on it and zoom passed people. I definately noticed it pulling a bit harder, don't know if it's a placebo effect but it did seem like it's louder up top and pulls more.

Definately happy with the mod though, and I'll be ordering the intake spacers once I get my tuition taken care of.

I found a dyno pic on doing a google search over @ maxima.org and it was even an altima 3.5 that did the dyno run with the VIAS removed. It was the only mod and lost about 7-9hp from 3000-3500 but was the same before and after until 5K when it gained a nice bunch of power. Just over 11hp after 5K and 2 ft lbs peak but more importantly about 10 ft lbs less drop off on the top end. If I had to say what those sort of power gains look like, I dare say the gains looked extremely similar to a set of upgraded cams and from just removing the stupid VIAS plate. Gotta love it for so cheap! I was REALLY excited to see that much of a gain.

I agree, it feels like a new set of cams installed. Can we get a link to that dyno graph?

I have some experience on motorcycles, putting GSXR cams into my bandit 1200, and it is a similar response. The mid range smoothed out a bit (i.e. a little drop in torque), but the top end really has more pull to it. Removing the VIAS doesn't give the same gains as say aggresive cams, but it is a similar response I just hope my MPG's don't suffer, whether because of the VIAS removal or just my foot, cause I averaged 27.5 mpg in mixed highway city (commuting around the twin cities) on my last tank.

I think it may be because I am on the 4AT that I am feeling quite a bit of torque loss down low. Anyone else?

There is some loss but nothing dramatic. Might just be your butt dyno. Now hurry up and buy the spacer kit and your car will really come to life bud....
