Question ECU Reset

So I caled the dealer yesterday to ask a question about reseting the ECU and the tech told me that they could do it with the consult but you could get the same reset if you disconnect both batt terminals and then touch the two terminal ends together. He said that will drain the capasitors that hold the ECU memory. He also said that is should work for those times when you have to do the idle relearn. Has anyone tried this? does it work?

electronically it makes sense. I back-up my computer to my flash drive and then hold the power button to drain the capacators there. So i imagine it would work. I would try it and see what happens. It wont hurt your car at all. Hope this helps

Even if it doesn't work just leave the battery unhooked overnight. Either way there is no need to pay the dealership 109 to reset the ecu.

...I dont know how you could have left the battery terminals disconnected over night and nothing has happened. I mean I've left mine disconnected with the - and + touching for like 15 or 20 min and it reset my ecu. I've done this on my Z, Alti, mustang, lightning, etc. and worked everytime...

Just un hooking them overnight will not do anything. you have to hold the + and the - together for 5 minuites so that it will drain the capasitor. The capasitor will hold enough power to keep memory in the ECU for a couple weeks. I did it to mine yesterday and it works

Well maybe my capactiors in my ecu are broken or missing cause i could make a vid right now of me just disconnecting my negative terminal for 15min and then hook it back up and my ecu will reset. But hold the + and - always works as far as I know...

I think some folks are confused and think that disconnecting the battery will clear the ECU codes (SES light).

To the OP, as far as idle volume learning. My idle is high after having the air induction cleaning or whatever they call it. I've done the foot pedal procedure and it works right after, but not after the car has been sitting for a while. I got some paperwork from my mechanic about disconnecting one or two injectors and trying to have it learn that way - crazy @ss electronics these days...

got gas the other day and when i started up the car the light was on..so later when i had the chance i checked the gas cap ..it was fine and then went thru the list and checked the oil and it was low.. so fixed that then put a reader on the car. to be on the safe side and it gave me the code.. poo11 or something..any how saying my timing is advanced to far ..researched on here and found it is a common thing . for low oil and a cam position sensor. and going off just cuz it wants too..lol
