Rough Engine Sound During Startup - HELP!

Hi everyone...

I've been hearing this rough engine startup for quite sometime now. It doesn't happen all the time and whenever it happens, the RPMs jump to like 2k and sit there for 1-2 seconds. During this time, the engine sounds very rough... After hovering in the 2k RPM area, the RPMs would gradually start to come back down to slightly over 1k RPMs as the engine warms up. The engine sound becomes smooth as well.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Is anyone familiar with this and what's causing it? Is this something I should be worrying about?

Thanks in advanced!

check engine light on? a code reader would help narrow down the problem as to what is malfunctioning.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, there's no check engine light.

What I mean by rough is like something's shaking or rattling maracas inside the engine.

How is the oil level? Maybe some sound or video clip could help narrow down the "shaking" sound.

My oil level is at least half way all the time... But there are times where I forget about it and it would drop to 1/4 level in between the L and H.

The rattling sound doesn't happen all the time. It's very random... However, it was exacerbated when I changed my oil yesterday. The rattling was very loud and it took longer.. If this problem is with regards to oil level, do you think it's because the new oil filter was dry at the time of the startup? Do I need to keep my oil level in the "H" level all the time to avoid this rattling sound?

I'm just afraid that this is causing long term damage to the engine... I always cringe when I hear this noise.

Thanks for the response BTW. I noticed you're from AZ...

Are you from AZ as well?

Do you have a 2.5 or 3.5? What year? Can you take a video of your car when it does this shaking sound?

Yes I'm from Phoenix... Wait a minute, are you Jeff?

I have a 2005 2.5S. I'll try to take a video of the said sound. I hope I can capture it.

umm There is no oil level gauge in the car? You're talking about the Engine Temperature gauge sugar bear. Right above the gas gauge correct?
