DTC u1000/ u1001

Hi , I have a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL. I recently saw my check engine light illuminate. I scanned the code with Nissan Datascan software/adapter and found U1000/ U1001. I did self diagnostics with the ecm , bcm and finally tcm. The self diagnostics however doesnt work on the TCM. It says that Connection failed. Is the U1001/ U1000 code indicate a communication problem to the TCM? If there is a bad TCM can I replace it with a used one? Do I need to perform any relearn procedure to the TCM? I have also been Noticing rough shifts for the past 3 months without any check engine light untill yesterday.
