i think changing the elbow to a smoother pipe is a good idea. you are gonna have to measure the throttle body outside diameter and the outside diameter of the rear of the MAF sensor housing. compare them to the 3" elbow, you might need two different sized reducer couplers.
opening the other side of the intake plenum to have two openings would be good too. i have to return my car back stock (its a lease) and i wanted a more direct airflow to the filter thats why i bought the duct for the VQ. i did some internal mods to it too btw for a smoother/better flow.
i wouldnt however open it where you indicated. id open it at that flat forward facing piece that goes into the radiator support. if you bend down and look you will see right
thru it into the car. thats how the air gets into the car for the VQ setup
