I was reading a 'newbie' thread on nice club and they were dicsussing acceleration on a 4cy and someone brought up advanced 2* timing and how you can get it done at the dealership for fairly cheap and it helped quite a bit. Any more info on it? I found nothing.

It has somthing to do with a device called the Consutlant 2, or somthing like that, iam shore one of the more knowledgeable guys can tell us more. I think you bring the car to the dealer and if the guy is cool he will do it for you.

I did it with my Spec V I had. If you talk to a Nissan tech without first talking to the service advisor he'll probably do it for like 20 bucks. I work at a Nissan dealer so I did it myself. It takes less than 5 minutes. Keep in mind that you will gain low end but also loose some top end in exchange. It may hurt your mpg too. I don't remember.
Nissans in general are diagnosed and, to some extent, tuned by using software that talks to the ECU through the OBDII diagnostic port in the dash. (on the Altima, it can do some of the same things by using the wireless network.) The software is called "Consult", and the current edition is "Consult-III". It runs on a laptop, and one of the many things it can do is to is that magic timing shift. The software is mentioned many times in the shop manual, but not many people have it, outside of Nissan dealers- and it ain't cheap.
keep in mind that you cannot have this done by a dealer in NY. Because we are regulated by the state for emmissions they cannot alter the timing. It throws out a little more smog. Also you have to dun premium gas in it to stop knock and ping. If you find a good shop to do it let us know.

Driving through MD yesterday, I saw a Black Mustang convertible with lots of exhaust smoke. It sounded great though, like a race car almost. Very low hangers kind of growl. Wonder if VQ or QRs with timing advance and exhaust mods would sound anything similar.
Are the low end gains noticeable? And using CVT or just regular putting your foot all the wa down, your using higher rpms, so will the timing even matter since we use higher RPMs when we want to go fast?
I'm personally highly interested in this timing advancing. I'll ask around the service center today if I get to go pick up my car. They did a major f up and I'm sure would be willing to entertain the thought.

I'm sure your right. It's common for a dealer to customize your ecu when they make a mistake. BTW what is 2* going to do for your car make it alot faster?

Uh, exhaust smoke would be a bad thing. The mustang you heard probably had straight pipes. No cats and no mufflers. Even without cats, you should not see smoke.

The Consult II or III is the dealer service tool that links to the ECM and can perform the timing change (among MANY other things). However, the Autoenginuity, Cipher and now the Bullydog Nissan Powerpup can also perform the timing advance.
I have a 2007 3.5SE, and the Nissan tech could not get the Consult II OR III to perform the timing advance on my car. It's not something the techs do on a routine basis...something about a software update to the Consult and calling Nissan corporate. I'd say you'll be hard pressed to find a tech that dedicated to bumping your timing.
I HAVE the Autoenginuity w/ Nissan-enhanced package, which advanced the timing on my car with no problems at all. It will perform idle-volume relearn, reset the ECM fuel trims, and supposedly can adjust the idle speed, although it doesn't work on mine (just idle-speed adjustment).
The 2º advance did not affect my fuel economy at all. Power increase was not dramatic, but noticeable. Low-end is definitely where you feel it mostly. Of course, the VQ has such superb low-end torque that modest changes go a long way on this engine. I'd wager it would be much more noticeable on the 2.5. I noticed no losses in the high end at all.
Most Nissan dealers won't agree to bump the timing. I called all three local Nissan dealers, and none of them would do it. I just made friends with a Nissan tech at one of them later on and he agreed to do it. Of course, he tried, and failed because the Consult II/III wouldn't work.
The base ignition timing can be adjust +/- 4º. The timing adjustment is built into the ECM to allow techs to diagnose problems. It's not really MEANT to be a permanent change. If the timing is adjusted further than 2º in either direction, as soon as the Consult is unplugged, the ECM kicks it back to 0. However, up to +/- 2º will "stick". That timing change does NOT get reset when the ECM is reset or the battery is disconnected. I've tried it, so I know. Just saying.
No no no. The Nissan Powerpup does MANY MANY things to the ECM to add power. Only ONE of those things is to advance the timing. The Powerpup can advance timing (if you program it to do so), and a WHOLE lot of other things, too.
