Short Shifter how-to

Alright, i bought one of those 20$ short shifters off ebay And just spent the last couple hours putting it in. I figured i would document the procedure. Here we go

Step 1.

find this area of heat sheilding under the car (should be right behind/above the cat.and remove the heatsheild, you will probably have to bend the tabs on one side in order to get it up and around the cat.

Step 2.

remove bolt on the end of current shifter and spring.not shown in this picture but would be where the arrow is pointing please excuse the crappy quality of this one but it was really hard to get a camera up in there and get a decent one.

Sep 3.

next remove these two bolts.

Step 4.
at this point go inside the car. stick your hand in the shift boot and pull gently on the houseing of the shiftboot. it should pop off. then remove these two bolts.

Step 5.
at this point the whole assembly should be removeable. take it out and take all the parts off the old shifter it should look something like this.

Step 6.
at this point just reverse the process to get everything back together.

Final Notes.

you will probably have to take a hammer and dent the heat sheild in order to keep the new shifter from hitting it. Short shifters have a longer bottom than the stock one.Thats how they get their shorter movement. If you have trouble getting your shift knob off just twist left really hard. they are glued on from the factory. if your shifter is like mine than hte ball on it will be smaller than stock and you will probably need to grab a urathane washer from homedepot and put it in there otherwise there will be verticle play. mine is doing that right now but i decided to do this on thanksgiving so homedepot wasnt open. i guess I'll live with it untill i get time to put one in. other than that its a fairly straight forward process. getting in there to remove the bolts on the bottom can be a bitch, you will probably need a ratched with a swivaling head. that is what i used. Id say its well worth the time though. enjoy.

**UPDATE**
alright the washers you need to put in if you have a problem with movement when done are 1 and 1/4 inch slip joint washers.

Nice write-up! I had to hammer out the heatshield on mine as well. I'll get the guys to move this FAQ.
