Problem while filling up with gas

Lately, I've been having a problem with my altima. While filling up, the pump will just stop like it's already full. It keeps on doing this and can't pump on its own. I have to hold the gas lever at a certain spot for it to pump. Sometimes, gas will leak out while pumping even though it's not anywhere near full. Does anyone know what's going on or have a similar problem? Thanks.

It has to do with the lines that go from the gas tank to the filler neck and bypass the tube. They are for venting the vapor in the gas tank while you fill up. They've probably got fuel in them. This can happen when you over-fill the gas tank. If you've put in more fuel after the first click when it's working normally, then this is most likely to occur.

you need to have your fuel system cleaned out using a suction method that has to be professionally done. it'll cost about 75 bux.

Thanks for the responses. For the suction method, should I have it done at the stealership or should any mechanic be able to do it?

I just had this EXACT problem as you described, i have a 98 altima. I took it to the dealership and they replaced a valve that lets air out while your pumping. It was going to cost 320 but i know a guy so it was 240. The parts is apparently $125 now that you know the problem save the 100 bucks on the diagnosis(computer code is 215 i think and it is called a vent control valve i think)!!! I'm 99% sure it is the problem. It is common and dealerships know exactly what it is

You can check out my thread, its called 'GAS won't go down, vent problem? HELP'

If you want to know more just ask

I just had this done as well - I have a '98 GXE - you can search for my prior post on it. In my case the whole valve assembly just needed to be replaced, the canister was fine. $30 for the part, $32 for labor and away we go....................my error code was p1446................

seems to me lots of 98 nissans have gas filling up issues! my friend had the problem when he could only fill up maybe 2-4 dollars total of gas...about 10 cents at a time!! usually it is the vent or the charcoal canister..in his case it was the canister in your case it is the vent! go figure
