I have a HUD cluster and display, but I tested the cluster and the speedo didn't work, so it's just sitting here at the shop.

EDITED: Looks like the .avi files contains codec issues. I will have to re-encode with another codec. Sorry folks.

Ok, here is the codec you can download and install to see the .avi files. It works!

Since I was shooting for using both types of instrument clusters I did come up on a problem. The automatic has an overdrive on/off light bulb (OD ON/OFF) in the instrument cluster. That signal is on pin 3 of the M41 plug. It is the exact same location for the VSS signal of a manual transmission. If you do not remove this light bulb then power will flow through it and drown the VSS signal and anything having to do with speed basically won't work. But the car doesn't go into limp mode (fail-safe) even though the VSS signal flows from VSS->Speedometer->ECU-ATCU-ASCD.

kjk11:
Sorry, I don't want to go off thread topic but actually I haven't done anything to my stereo so I can't offer much info on it. But I am sure the people in the Car Audio/Multimedia forum can help you out. There is also a FAQ on swapping the AC and radio that shows how to remove it. It is not hard at all to do.

slippy4twenty:
You have a '97 GXE. I don't have a '97 FSM to look at the wiring diagram but I am very sure all of the M45 plug signals are up there in the cluster area. Wire color coding is surely different than mine though.

If anyone wants to contribute the wiring diagrams for the different model years I will compile and add in their information to this thread.

Roger that, only the speedo reading. The display has three (3) LED segments and no half (1/2)segment so even if you could create additional circuitry to support a tach signal it would max out at a 999 RPM readout.

But going along your line of thought I can visualize something like this,

1. Build additional external circuitry to that would,
....a) disconnect the main speedo signal to the DISPLAY ONLY.
....b) feed it another signal like oil pressure.
....c) but have that oil pressure voltage go through a DC to pulsed frequency converter first.
....d) have an anunciator that would tell you it is oil pressure you are looking at.

I am sure that it would be a 'piece of cake' for an Electronic Engineer to build.

Interesting idea though.

Not entirely sure because I haven't opened it up but it seems to me like a vacuum flourescent display (VFD).

Sorry for the bump but I was thinking of this last night....
if there was any electronic engineers in here a neat thing to build woulf be some kind of module that sends the correct signals to the hud display, but converts it to some kind of standard signal, i dont know the right voltages and all that but I think you guys get the idea....
HUD----Box---ford signal
Hud----Box ---chevy signal

understand what I am getting at, then for people that do real custom shit, you could put a nissan HUD display in just about anything....

I am guessing a pontiac setup would work good for GM cars though

Hud would definately be neat with a custom dash in my 58 chevy
