I had a similar idea running in my head also but in order to make this more universal it is better to use an interface on the diagnostic port and poll ALL the ECU sensor status via a microcontroller. Then have the microcontroller pump out the information to a vacuum flourescent display (VFD) that shines on the windshield.
It would be like a CONSULT reader but instead display on the windshield.
what's all the stuff to the left of the speed digits? i saw one video that has even more stuff there, and then something in addition poped up and blinked.... take they were blinkers. but yeah whats that stuff to the lefT? and why does it appear there was 'more stuff' in the video that he didn't move in?

The flourescent display has indicators for, left and right turn signals, door, brake, check, and speed in either km/h or mph format.
Just wanted to know how long it took to do this? I had the HUD on a 93GLE and wanted to put it on my 95 se more so in the middle of the driver's side. I'm not the ace at wiring, and don't know if I could do this..
And how much if anyone has the cluster and wiring. I have the piece that goes on the top of the dash that shows the speed, etc.
I worked on this project "on and off" so it took about 4 months total from acquiring the parts 'til completion. I was in no hurry...
The heads up display unit you have is made to perfectly go into the area it was designed for. Which is to the left peripheral of the dash. With some ingenuity, you could probably find a way to put it in the center of the dash but it will most likely disturb your field of vision...at least for me it would.
Your best bet is to find the remaining parts at eBay or a local junkyard. I prefer to deal with people that part cars for a living instead since they have better customer service than your typical junkyard. Most junkyards are just into moving large items for quick cash and don't care about the small or odd sales.
Anyway, good luck with the project.

id just like to say im working on a conversion now. i used the diagrams from page 1 to figure the correct wiring for my 97. anybody actually still interested in this?
Wow! One of my most ancient surviving threads! Yes, please share your diagrams in this thread.
Remember, when you're doing this conversion and plan to use the stock Nissan HUD, you have to also change the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) to one from a '93-'94 Altima, or from an engine which uses the same VSS that we have.
well its hard to explain in detail, and i have yet to cut a hole in the dash. i used the diagrams that were first posted to splice the M41, HUD, and M42 to the correct wires from the 97, since i left the stock ones there in case i want to remove the hud cluster and reuse the stock one, only a few wires were rearranged/recolored by nissan for the year difference. anyways i got everything hooked up and working, however i still need the early VSS because the hud will say im going 29 when i know im doing 50.
idk yet if its just a ruined cluster, but the odometer doesnt work, the tach is off, the speedo is busted, the temp gauge doesnt work at all... i know i wired everything up correctly but its like all that work and all i really did was a digital dash. at least the fuel level still works fine, that was critical.
all the warning lights (door, belt, ignition) work with the exception of the left turn signal, which will display in the hud but not the cluster.
i dont like how the hud is green, id rather it be blue but im glad it dims when 'it knows its night time' (turn on headlights)
anyway it was just simple 'figure out where this wire goes' and splice wires of the same color. ill create a list of what hud wires need to connect to what, for example i reused the M43, 44, and 45 harnesses, and because the M42 (yellow connector) is exactly the same however the 93 has a red/yellow that isnt on the 97, i wired that to [another wire that it went to].
most of it is the wires into the hud are just spliced to whichever wires that they need that reading i.e. turn signal, speed, to read onto the hud.
well... i let the wonderful world of LAZYNESS get the better of me. anyway theres only like 3 wires that need to be spliced to itself -- its REALLY simple to figure out by looking at those diagrams, just connect the same name wires.. but its just a bad project in all. it can be done if you have the will. maybe ill just post a for sale thing on here somewhere for the not-really-working cluster with 2 hud displays (the digits that project onto the glass, ther both green i found out. but instead i would love to just f**k the wiring, only get the hud part running, get the correct speed sensor, and make a custom guage cluster like they do in japan.
